Depends on the wine. Ideal temps are: White wine = 45 deg (take out of fridge 10 min before serving) Red wine = 65 deg (put in fridge 10 min before serving). The biggest reason (IMHO) to get a "Wine cooler" is that you can set the temp in this range.
A TIP: If you're like me and forget about chilling the wine until the doorbell rings you can put a white wine in the freezer for 20-30 min and get the right temp. Set a timer though, otherwise you'll forget!
Better quality wines can "handle" higher temps (but why take needless risks).
A great wine label at (generally good prices too) is "Columbia Crest".

I like my white wine chilled and served in a large mouth stemmed glass, also chilled. Red wine served room temperature is fine but I still like my glass chilled.
White: Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio or Luna di Luna mix Chardonnay/Pinot
Red: Beringer Cabernet or whatever Merlot is on sale

I'm a Port gal myself. Ponte Wineries in Temecula, CA makes a wonderful Zinfandel Port that has a chocolate bite to it. If I were an alkie, that is what I'd sit around and drink all day long and straight from the bottle!

I like mine both and depends where I'm at, how I like my wine.
White wine Chardonnay's are cheap and Zinfandels are too. Check out your local liquor store (liquor stores are cheaper to buy it at than a grocery store or gas station store).

I've found Cost Plus Imports to be a good place to try some new wines at a reasonable price. I generally prefer a somewhat dry red, at room temperature (no chilling needed -- instant gratification!). Rosemount Shiraz (Australia) is a highly-rated, inexpensive wine that you can buy at Costco for about $9 a bottle. I personally like Santa Ema (Chile) reds, around $8 a bottle.

We are "Winos". That actually is the name of our wine tasting club here. There is a fantastic Shiraz found at some Costcos called Sixth Sense. Some of the Chilean wines are reasonable and are often good. Read the wine notes on the labels, it helps you with some of the flavors and such. Have fun!

Try to buy wine from a location thats usually a constant warm tempurature, like Chile, Australia, Italy or California. They usually end up with the best flavors.
