Why do people call it "West Coast" and then make reference only to things Californian? It's not the only state in the west, you know.
Thank you!
I'm a native Texan and even I know that you have Southern California, Northern California, and then you have Oregon and Washington which are part of the Pacific Northwest. OR and WA are very different cultures from California (food-wise and otherwise ) and even California could be divided up into two or more separate hoods if you really want to get into it. "West Coast" doesn't really tell a person anything at all when you are talking about something like food... and also about things like the lifestyle, culture, etc.
I will just stay with the food I grew up with,,, Southern Utah Cuisine...that means, big pancakes for breakfast, with maple syrup. Lunch is usually thick soup, a big sandwich, on fresh homemade bread, chock full of fresh veggies and cheese. Dinner, a big spread of home made mashed potatoes, gravy, maybe fried chicken, with honey, fresh tomato salad. Big bowl of peaches and cream for dessert.
It may not be fancy, but you just can't beat good food. No fish. No spicy foods. Just lots of real plain old American food. Pass me that big ear of corn....and a baked potato...with a steak.
I would pick the southeast. The south has such wonderful farms, and their produce is wonderful. Pick the east side and you have your pick of anytype of seafood, fresh. And then throw in some organic farm animals and you have the best of both worlds.
Of course my home state is wonderful with seasonal veggies. But still all in all I would chose the south.
Louisiana food would completely satisfy me. There's classic French cuisine plus local variations of ingredients as well as Cajun and purely local treats. Ne plus ultra!
I want some Oysters Rockefeller right now.
This! New Orleans and Louisiana in general take food very seriously. Always a good meal to be had.
I've liked food in all the different places I have lived so far. But if I could choose only one, I'd have to say southern California because of the diversity in choices--it offers virtually all varieties of cuisines with an extra emphasis on Mexican food (one of my all-time faves) and healthy eating (lotsa fruits and veggies!).
For me it would have to be the south/southwest. I grew up in Texas where you get the wonderful southern foods, as well as the Texas bbq (I know, BBQ is a southern thing too), chicken fried steak, Tex-Mex, Mexican etc. It may not be the healthiest, but I'm not looking at it from that aspect, I'm just looking at it from the pure enjoyment side.

I thought the same thing: What about all the fresh fish for instance as you travel to NO CA, Or and into Washington? There is more to that side of the country than So Ca.
A few people have thrown Cajun/Louisiana in with southern cooking. To me there is such a divergence there, completely different cuisines. I know that Louisiana is a southern/southeastern state, but the style of food and cooking is completely different and separate from 'southern' cooking, and I say this as someone who has lived 32 of 37 years in the south.
