I remember the meals my Mother and Grandma made were awful tasty. They loved working with Cook Books. I wonder if they really made food as good as a 5 Star restaurant or was it just rose colored glasses?

Is it possible for the average person to create food at home as nice as a 5 star restaurant?

Of course! It's tastes better, there's enough of it. It's homemade and it costs about a 5th as much to make. Not only that but there is a special ingredient in it that you will never get in a 5 star resturant. Love

I agree with northcountrygirl--better at home; even better with good, fresh ingredients and with a little extra time--a 5 star meal!

i have simple taste-buds,,,most dishes over 6 ingredients i believe,,many flavors conflict,,,
i remember going to this 5-star "open-house" the day before the restaurant opened,,,,and one dish was this french ,,,something filet-mignon,,,
well it looked great and everyone raved about it,,,,but ,,because it was over seasoned and over,,sauced,,it tasted like turkey ham,,,,
of course after a couple drinks i was asking around what others thought,,and many others ,,came to the same conclusion,,but didnt want to say anything,,

Try doing a search for any number of online blogs and you will be greeted with a cascade of tasty-looking pictures that definitely rival that of 5-star restaurant creations. As many have said before in another thread, it is not so much the food sometimes as it is the atmosphere that you are paying for at said restaurants.

I believe the magic ingredient of the upper echallon restraunts is... butter, butter, and more butter. Even on the steaks!

yep...butter is the supreme ingredient and so is heavy cream. I took a chef's gourmet cooking class at the local college years ago.

People who have to watch fat grams, sodium and cholestrol should not be eating the typical gourmet/5 star type food. Me included.

I don't think tasty 5 star gourmet food is solely about butterfat, I think it is about the creative melding of different flavors--and the presentation.
Artfully preparing fresh ingredients at home is not at all impossible, it just takes a combination of preparation and timing.
Sometimes when I am out at some fancy place I do calculate in my head how easy it would be to cook this stuff myself. Other times I truly am impressed with the innovative dishes.
Regardless, one thing that you do have to deal with at home is the dirty dishes.

Having been on and then off the road so much these last few months, I'd give more than the price of a five star restaurant for a week of good at home cooking, and frankly, it ain't butter, but better, imo
