Unknown Mexican restaurant
Fort Stockton, Texas
Ribeye steak with red chile
Husband and I were driving across Texas and stopped for the night in Fort Stockton. After we settled in at our hotel, the only place open was a restaurant across the road. It was an anonymous cinderblock building with a dirt parking lot and a flickering neon sign in the window. Not promising, but we were starved so we went for it.
The steak was small but perfectly seared and the red chile was delicious, just hot enough and the flavor perfectly balanced. Sides included a delicious roasted corn salad. Even if I could find the place, I don't think I'd go back because if it was anything less than the perfect meal I remember I would be sad. I'm happy with the memory of that perfect meal.
My other "best thing" was in the Night Market in Chiang Mai, Thailand. A woman had half a pig hanging in her food stall. She shaved off some meat, minced it with garlic, chiles and other spices, and formed it into meatballs that she put on a skewer and grilled in front of me. I don't know why this was so good, because I've had a lot of good street food, but I loved it.

10-course seafood dinner
Oh. My. God.
Hands down, that was the best meal I've ever eaten! All kinds of ultra-fresh seafood cooked in the most mouth-watering ways, along with amazing side dishes. I will never forget that meal!
The cafe attached to the Stone Manor Motel in Harrodsburg, KY. We are talking knotty-pine, Mom 'n Pop. First time I ever had a Southern fried fish dinner with all the fixins. Including corn cakes.
Figs off the tree in the town in Italy where my father was born, followed by homemade pasta with sauce that included wild boar. Also gelato from anywhere in Rome
Southern Cross food-it's a resort in Little Caymen-that chef was by far the most talented-the best indian, sea food, breakfast I have ever had. I was there 4 days 4 nights and gained 5 pounds..even with all the swimming and walking. ..I think about it often
Been watching an ad for an upcoming show called Best Thing you ever ate, got to wondering what that could be over 70 years of stuffing my face, i cant come up with any single item but IMO best thing i ever ate was Moms turkey and ham Christmas dinner with all the fixins.
I think good meals are as much about the situation as the food. The meals that come to mind are from vacations. Fresh seafood and fruit, dining in Mexico next to the Pacific. The Italian meal I had at Epcot. The buffet at the Contemporary at Disney world. Fresh caught bluefish on Block Island. Lobsters in Maine. I couldn’t choose just one.

But ostrich carpaccio in South Africa is a top contender.
