Does anyone know where the custom knocking on the breakfast/lunch/dinner table when getting up and leaving comes from? Does this come from a country in Europe? What is the history of this?

I thought it might come from the days of kings and knights in those u shaped tables but I could be wrong.

I love a good puzzle, but I'm not sure that this is the answer that you were looking for:

Knocking on wood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Scroll down to "Denmark" to see the "knock ounder table" reference.)

I've never heard of knocking on the table when you were leaving. I've only heard of knocking on wood three times to offset jinxing yourself when you've made a premonition/thought you really want or don't want to have happen. You find real wood and say as you rap it, "Knock on wood!" lol Totally ridiculous I'm sure, but it sure does happen in New England.

Knock on wood...yeah. On a table, never heard it either.

In Europe trees were once thought to have spiritual significance. That's why we have Christmas trees and some building sites still put a tree on a work in progress to "bless" it.

I never heard of knocking on a table when getting up and leaving, either. You sure this wasn't just a family tradition?

I usually knock on my forehead when I say this. It's the densest hardwood this side of the Pecos!
