I had some fruit, I believe in Kingston,JM or Cancun,MX (ok, I was around 5 at the time), and I'm trying to find out what it was and/or where I can find some in the USA. Here's what I remember about it:

Each fruit was slightly smaller than a tennis ball.

There were two varieties, one with green skin, and one with a dark purple, almost black skin. The dark ones were sweeter.

The flesh of the fruit was very sweet and juicy. I believe it was a blood red.

The skin and flesh were separate, ie, an orange peel vs apple peel. I don't remember how tough the skin was, as my mom cut them for me.

I think there were seeds, but they were evenly patterned and easily extracted.

I know this isn't much information to go on, but any help is appreciated. I know they are not guavas.

Thanks.

I'm in Austin,TX but am often in Pittsburgh,PA and New York,NY. I'm guessing I won't find any in Pittsburgh, but it seems like the climate down here in Austin should be conducive to growing these fruits. NY I'm guessing is possible as well since they get lots of exotic foods, of course for the right $$$.

I'd ask one of the produce people at Central Market about it, once they brought me some kaffir lime leaves from the back although they didn't have them displayed anywhere.

Also I don't know if there are any in Austin, but New York must have some Caribbean markets you can check out, and I saw a website saying it's a very common fruit in the Phillipines as well so I'd look in Filipino markets as well. Good luck, it must be good if you've remembered the taste this long!

It was the greatest fruit I've ever eaten. Of course, time may have made them even sweeter!

Try wikipedia, write down the equivalent name in other languages, ie spanish, Vietnamese ect and hit your local ethnic markets with your alternate pronunciations.
