Waffle House is a throwback to the '50s and '60s when short order foods were typical fare in cafes and diners across the U.S. Nothing fancy and nothing that takes a long time. It's plain, good and decent food, and I've never had anything bad there (nothing truly remarkable either). But some reasons that a lot of folks like it:
1. no chocolate doo-diddles
2. no rooty-tooty
3. it doesn't confound and confuse the waitress and cook when you ask them to put some onions in your hash browns
4. their cooks usually know how to cook an egg to order
5. you can watch your food being cooked and inspect the kitchen anytime you want
6. if you flirt with your waitress or call her darlin', she'll just smile and make sure your coffee cup doesn't run dry
7. fast and cheap
1) You always know what you are going to get.
2) They are generally open all night.
3) They repel food snobs.
4) They make a great waffle.
5) Generally, the staff is friendly ... with an attutude.
My only visit was to one in KY I believe. DH really wanted to stop in while we were on a road trip, as he had memories of doing so traveling with his parents as a child. It's kind of a southern experience. Seems like it was over priced.
I live in Kansas City. Around here they are called the "Awful Waffle" and you enter one at your own risk. Fights, drunks, shootings, dirty sticky floors and you can only imagine the bathrooms...no, doesn't even come close to an IHOP, Denny's and Cracker Barrel is like heaven compared to Awful Waffle.
I grew up eating at Waffle House's along I-75 in Georgia and really liked them. However, in recent years most of them I see are extremely dirty and I will not eat at one.
