Default Self Scanner at the Supermarket

I believe I saw on of the self-scanners at the check-out counters recently, but I haven't come across the scanner that can be used as you shop and purchase in the aisles.

Has anyone used these? Do you like them? Do they work easily?

At some of the Fred Meyer Stores, they consider their customers intelligent enough to scan their own purchases at check-outs. It's actually kind of fun. At some of the Wal-Mart stores too, in the merchandise section, there are randomly placed scanner stations so the customer doesn't have to ask the help how much something cost. Good idea.

Yeah, seashelly, I use the Fred Meyer ones a lot when I'm up in the NW. However, ontheroad's link has to do with actually scanning and bagging your items as you walk down the isle then paying at the front of the store.

How do they protect themselves against dishonest people? At least at the existing self-scanning checkout, there's somebody there watching you as you scan the items to make sure you're not trying to put something in your bag without scanning it. I've been "caught" inadvertently putting something in my bag without it registering on the scanner. It's embarrassing because they don't know for sure that you're not doing it on purpose which I, of course, wasn't.

I think that self scanners are annoying. Ive only used them three times but everytime I could have stood in line and had a cashier do it & it would have been faster. Sometimes the light will blink on the scanner and you have to wait for a shiftleader to come over & see whats wrong which can take forever & then as soon as they walk away and get distracted it happens again. I dont like them

At Bloom grocery store they have the coolest thing. Self check out personal scanners. You get this little hand held scanner, a hand full of grocery bags (paper or plastic). You shop on your own, scan as you go, put them in the bag yourself. The price gun shows you your purchases, the prices and your total with taxes. You can add or subtract as you go. It is great if you are buying something on sale and it reads 3 for $7.98 and you only need one, it will scan one and give you the sale price dived by 3. Very helpful in you are on a budget too.

Check them out, shopbloom.com. I work at a grocery store (not bloom) but I shop at bloom because it is fun, easy and great prices.

Thanks--yes those are the scanners the article referred to and about which I was inquiring.

Yes, they will certainly put more folks out of work.

Smile Self scanners that is a wonderful idea!

Hello,

Anything that can take the work out of grocery shopping and get us out the door faster is great. We are having now in Walmart self-checkout counters
hopefully it will happen in other locatons as well.

David from Edmonton

The other day I was at Albertson, there were several scanners,I thought oh good.So I stood in line. The guy was taking soooo much time,I was tempted to go to the other self scanners, which was taking a long time. The ones with a cashier were going thru faster,I ran to the cashier, the guy who was taking time was still there. So,I still rather use the cashier

I do NOT like them. I prefer personal interaction. And yes, those scanners will cost jobs. Liz
