We've only lived in TX a year (thus the minivan )!! Most of my friends drive Suburbans or Tahoes or only have two kids but you are right, there are PLENTY of pick-ups in the carpool lane.
Honestly, I would consider a F250/350. The F150 is a great truck but the F250/350's have slightly more interrior room. Then install some form of fold up bed cover for storing stuff when traveling etc.

OK - you are excused! Lots and lots of trucks as family vehicles here. Many families with two kids drive compact crewcabs like a Frontier.
I'd go with a pickup. I'd spend some time looking eco-boost engines that Ford introduced.
I have my old pickup and a sedan. I'd love to have a pickup for my DD. Use the lincoln for cruising.
For five of those you really need a trailer not a pickup especailly a four door with a 5 foot bed.We never used pickup beds to carry alot of bikes when we use them off raod.
But if you have 3 full size children, I just don't see them enjoying sitting closely together on a bench seat for 13+ hour trips.
I agree. And they also wouldn't have as much window space/ability to look out. Might work with two kids, but not with three - not for driving that long a distance.
I drive one and rode in my brother's from TX to florida with 4 adults and one baby seat, and it was not a problem. F150 crew cab is a great family vehicle. One thing that you will miss however with 5 people in it is the trunk space. I keep my bed open in mine, but my brother has a bed cover that rolls up. Oh, the f150 back seat has more room than a tahoe or suburban.
