It's a great engine, lots of power and decent mileage....after you add ARP head studs , EGR delete, coolant filter... about $5k of stuff if you paid someone to do it. Stuff that shouldn't have to be done. So no in my opinion it isn't a good engine, they all to some extent have issues but this one is plagued with more than it should have. There are also some out there that have been flawless for thousands of miles... I just wouldn't want to roll the dice on one.
The dealer wants 16,000 dollars for this truck and I think they will have a hard time selling it because of the engine. Why would a dealer even buy this truck in first place?
Because diesel.
Diesel trucks have extraordinary resale value. Anytime an import snob wants to brag about the resale value of imports over domestics just ask them to run the numbers on a domestic 2500 or 3500 diesel truck. It will shut them up.
The engine doesn't have a 100% failure rate and like another poster said there are people that know how to make them last. So the vehicle still has considerable value despite its spotty reputation.
If it weren't a 6.0 they would be asking even more money for it.

You are correct ! 4 years ago I sold a 2001 2500 Dodge Ram quad cab with a Cummins. It had all the right things done to it for longevity/towing and had 156k miles on it. The bottom of the doors and the rockers were starting to rust thru... I got $13,700 for that from the first person that came out to look at it...oh and that person drove 3 hours from the next state to buy it. Looking back I probably could have gotten more.
The salesman said we have people calling here every week looking for diesel trucks. This truck was owned by a old man the salesman said. The owner traded in also a 5th wheel camper.

Yep; I just sold a 7 year old Chevy 2500 diesel for 60% of what I paid for it new, in 36 hours, on ebay to someone who found it local and wanted me to end the auction early. I was amazed. It only had 50k miles so I think the fact that the same model year on ebay has plenty of examples with 150,000 to 250,000 miles made it an easy sale when you know how much longer they can last. Dealers were offering me 8k less if I had used it as a trade.
Wow, a lot of mis-information in this thread. I have a 2013 6.7L Ford and love it, I know a lot about the diesels over the years.
Stock, the 6.0 was junk. 100% Junk, just like you will read.
However, if you dump around 3-4k into it, you can "bulletproof" it as they call it, and ditch all the weak points it's notorious for. After this, it will be as reliable as any diesel out there. Check out the powerstroke forum (google the site) and ask on there...
I wouldn't buy one, not worth the hassle, many that own them and have done what they need to bulletproof them, love them!!

In other words. Simply avoid these trucks, unless you can clearly take advantage of their reputation.

And based on your knowledge of the subject, you should continue to leave it in their possession. Trust me, some guy was probably ecstatic to get that thing off his hands, like a hot potato. Don't get burned. With up to 16k to spend you can go get a creampuff 7.3L and drive it hard for decades to come.
