Usually, if you fix the problem, the CEL will go off on it's own after a couple of days of driving and engine start/stop cycles.

Some cars don't have a fuse for the EEC. I know my Infiniti does not.

Pulling the neg cable resets a lot of variables that the car has learned over hundreds of miles of driving. Shift points, timing curves, etc.

Best way to erase the code is a scanner. They are under $20 these days. No excuse not to have one if you do your own vehicle work.

Misfires are troubleshot by checking 4 things

Air - usually a blockage such as a rodent building a nest in the intake. Doesn't happen really all that often on a car regularly being driven.

Spark - plug and coil.

Fuel - Verify the injectors are firing and not clogged. Verify proper fuel pressure at the injectors

Compression - Check compression of each cylinder to ensure a head gasket hasn't blown.

With the plug and coil changed out, my next tast would be to check fuel pressure and injectors and then run a compression test. The last car I did this procedure to I discovered one cylinder had no compression and found a valve had actually cracked and was missing a huge chunk.
