Wait, what's a new Edge GT? Was this meant to be a new "age" GT, the S550? Or are we talking about the crossover Edge which doesn't have a GT trim? Totally confused here.
4th generation Mustang. Called New Edge, one with sleek design. Roughly 93-04. OP is considering the GT version of that Mustang.

New Edge were the 99-04 Mustangs. Its my second least favorite generate of Mustang. I do not care for them one bit.
The new edge's were a Ford nickname for the 99-04 Mustangs, although they are still technically all the SN95 chassis designation which ran from 1994-2004.
Why the change from the S-197s that you seemed set on?
Don't get me wrong. I am still set on an S-197. But, I would not pass up a Mach1 or a Cobra. I just wasn't quite sure about the GT. If I had the cash in hand and found a great condition GT SN95, I was merely getting a measurement of opinions on the GT trim during this generation. The upside is that it seems like this particular gen is fairly easy to wrench on and the mods seem cheaper. But yeah, I'm ultimately more in love with the S197. It's sort of the "If you can't love the one you want, love the one you're with". Ultimately, I think if I was going to pull the trigger on one in this generation, I'd probably hold off and get a Mach1 or a Cobra, but they're not necessarily cheap. I'll probably wind up getting an S197 when it's all said and done, this is just mainly info gathering and keeping an open mind.
I don't have the cash on hand right now anyway. I'm trying to save up while we're paying off some debt. So, either way, it's going to be another year or so before I'm in the position to actually make a purchase.
The 1999-01 N/A SVT Cobra and the 03-04 Mach-1 are pretty much the same cars although the Mach 1 had the later 03-04 SVT "Terminator" Cobra improvements in Brakes, a Stiffer chassis and better factory Suspension setup then the 99-01 N/A Cobra.
The again one could take 2-Valve GT go to maximum Motorsports for chassis and suspension mods and add a Supercharger kit and have heck of Sports Car with Canyon Carving handling and close to 5.0 Coyote V8 Mustang GT in power for 1/3rd the cost.

Right. That would be the only reason why I would consider a GT earlier than '05. If it was one of those deals where the car still ran but needed some work and someone was willing to get rid of it for very cheap, (like sub $5k range), I'd definitely get it. Something to learn mods on. Other than that, if I'm getting one for a daily driver, my all time favorite gen is the S-197. Having said that, The Cobras and Mach 1's are fine pieces of machinery, and I would most definitely have one if I had the money. You can find them with very little miles on them, but you're going to pay a premium for them. I would not want to drive those every day.
