The 4.0 SOHC V6 in the final year (2011) of the US Ford Ranger was rated at 207 horsepower. The turbo 2.3 liter 4-banger they are talking about is going to be at least 280 horsepower, probably 300.
If I can be wooed away from Honda and Toyota, I might buy one.

They could have used the 3.3 V6 from the F-150 that makes 290hp. It’s not really about the power so much as it is the sound and refinement, I’m not paying over $30k for a truck with a buzzy harsh sounding engine.
Sorry, did I hear it right? Refined Ford Ranger?
It's supposed to be a truck, or a new version of Ford Sport Trac? If it's supposed to be a truck, not a boy toy for likely mostly younger buyers, then it needs a diesel to be one. Turboed 4 bangers are good for playgrounds, not to work.
I like it. I was debating an F150 this upcoming fall, but now I might hold out for a Ranger. I need to see the towing specs first though as I need to occasionally tow a car trailer behind it. Curious to see what they rate the 2.3L at for towing
while i like the truck, it lets me down in a number of areas, not the least of which is the ten speed transmission. i realize that fuel economy is the name of the game today, but really, six speeds is plenty. i dont mind turbocharged engines these days, and four bangers are a lot better than they used to be, but i agree that the lack of a V6 is also a let down.
If you think the 2.3 EB is buzzy or lacks power, you obviously have never driven one. It's far from buzzy and it doesn't lack power. While you might not like a 4 banger, consider that Ford has mules running around the USA with the 2.3 in truck form in F150 Supercrews. It's far from buzzy and it has the power to go when needed. When in a smaller Ranger chassis, it will be more than most will be looking for especially when coupled to a 10 speed auto. The tow rating as I've heard it is 5700lbs but things change before it hits the streets so I wouldn't run to the bank with that. The 10 speed auto is responsible for most of that. Kinda reminds me of my brothers 36 International pickup. There's not a lot it won't haul or tow. The engine makes 78 HP. It's all in knowing what to do with what you got.
The wife has the 2.0 248HP EB engine in her Escape. It will light up the front 19" tires. It's a screamer and gets good gas mileage to boot. I would expect the 2.3 in a Ranger to be a lot of power.
I might be a player for one. The engine doesn't bother me so much as they tend to build everything for small people these days, even the F150. It can be a real hassle getting in and out of one. I can't get in a Tundra at all- the damn cab forward crap is like getting in under the windshield. But if the Ranger has the gas mileage, power, and usable room, I might have one. Frankly though, I don't expect it to be any better gas mileage wise than any of the F150s. That's about 25-27 hiway. It just won't be cost effective to buy. And if Ford gets stupid with their pricing of an optional diesel like they did with the new F150 diesel, then it'd really not cost effective.

The key will be to keep the truck small. Currently sitting in Salinas, Ecuador. I've seen quite a few of these new Rangers in the last 2 weeks. Nice size, the base double cab versions look quite nice. Not sure how they will bling it up (and ruin it in my eyes) for the American market but if they could keep the truck simple and compact I'd actually consider it.
