Can ford make their own 7.3? Why not a 7.4?

No. It is a Navistar engine for one, just rebranded for Ford. It cannot meet emissions requirements, it will never be back in a production vehicle.

Ford 7.3
275 hp
525 lb/ft

Ford 6.7
440 hp
860 lb/ft

Why would they bring it back?

Ford can make A 7.3 or 7.4 all day long, if they so desire. But Ford can not make THE 7.3 Navistar engine.

Means the 7.3 from ford will not be the best as the Navistar engine?

SInce Ford doesn't have its own design 7.3 there is no way to tell if one will be or is better than the other. WHile the 7.3 was a good engine, it wasn't the best, just my opinion, and I owned one.

I hope not. Rattly, dirty old engine; oversold to guys who didn't need them, which pretty much describes most diesel pickups in the country.

why should ford go backwards on power plants? the 7.3 power stroke was a good engine, but the current 6.7 is a better engine at this point.
