All of thses suggestions the above posters are making are possibilities. If you aren't experienced, you will be better off going to a professional, who is equipped to dignose it quickly. You can spend a fortune guessing, and still never get it right. Cut out all of the headaches and get it done right.
I made my living for years, fixing cars towed in after a DIYer tried to save a few bucks.

I wanted to say it too but I didn't want to be a "troll". Now that you have, the Escort is a piece of shet! My wife had an Escort wagon and that thing was the worst car I ever saw. The engine head cracked on it at 72,000 miles and then the tranny dropped out of it at 86,000 when we finally got rid of it after having the ignition fixed on it 3 times, the radiator replaced and the radio and cigarette lighter quit working and we didn't even bother with that. Oh, and no AC after 75,000 either.

True, the Ford Escort was never much of a car. But apparently Ford screwed up and cast a few heads that wouldn't crack, the few survivors seem to not have that problem.

Former girlfriend had one she bought new, an 86 4-door with A/T - I always wondered how it managed to consume relatively so much gas (25-27 MPG) yet be so damn slow. And still pass smog for an 86 model year new car. Seems like there was enough heat energy left over that if it was all going one place (inefficient trans, cat, dragging brakes) it would have overheated that part.

But all that's beside the point - BP has one, or his kid does, so it makes more sense to fix and use it than to give it away or throw it away -

Even at today's gas prices; anything that returns 25+ MPG (provided it is reliable) is worth holding on to especially for short distance driving

I've owned 2. The first went 175,000 problem free miles before I sold it. The second I sold at about 50,000 to get a Ranger. I realize they're an average vehicle, but the 1989 I got for my step son for college was a 1 owner car (I know the owner) with all receipts and had 86,000 miles. He was asking $1,000 and I thiught it was too good to pass up.

What can I say. I like Fords.

Lucky you! I don't have a problem with Ford. Just that Ford. We had an Expedition that ran fine- only had problems with the electric windows a few times. Had a Mustang and it ran good too.

I love those mustangs.

My very first car was a candy apple red Ford Falcon Futura. The love of my teeanage life (after Julie Terwilliger, that is).

You know, if the kid is a real motorhead, if you can find a good Falcon, or that Falcon truck (forget what they called it) if you live in a non-rusting area, if you buy a good one at a good price, you will never pay for anything beyond gas, tires, and oil - (well, OK you will have to tune it occasionally but that's not really work, right?) it's basically the same car as the Mustang.

Or, find a Mustang with say a 3-speed on the floor (or 4 if you can find it) and the inline 6 - can buy it without paying big muscle car money, reasonably practical daily driver. Easy to work on.

Hope the Escort works out, the few remaining good ones do seem to be OK cars. Couple of guys at work have them, original owners, seem to have done alright with them.
