My husband just had his Ford Escape ltd (2004) towed to a transmission specailist garage. It was completely jammed (couild shift into all the gears though)-AAA guy had to drag it onto the truck as the wheels wouldn't budge. No warning at all that there was any problem-no slipping or weird noises.Just got in the car at home and hey presto.
I have unfortunately been looking at ford forums and discovered that a rebuilt trans could cost us $3-4,000-plus there will be the cost of car hire as seems like it can take 2-3 weeks.
Are there other things it could be that won't require replacement of the transmission?
Thanks in advance

No rebuilt trans for an Escape should cost that much!!!! You could probably find one on ebay for a grand or so. Could be numerous things causing it not to go into 2nd... is it a manual or auto? I would join a Escape owners forum and post your problem, see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Hi
Thanks for the help.
I am in the UK and husband is out there since April, so we don't know local mechanic or anything.
Apparently soemthing has snapped in the auto trans and the guy has quoted the figure I said.I got those figures from a Ford forum.
Wish I was a car mech instead of a RN!!!!!!
We will just have to bite the bullet and find the cash -only have $300 guaranteed CC as no credit history in the US yet-smack:

Meant to say think it is the labor charges that put up the cost.Folks on the Ford forum were saying they were without vehicle for 2-3 weeks. This guy says will be done by Thursday at latest, so at least car hire costs will be lower for us(trying to be optimisitic!)

Might help if you posted up the location for this and what garage he went to, some of the US chain garages are known rip-off artists.

At least the pound is fairly well up against the dollar, so you will be getting somewhat of a discount that way...

Good luck.

Thanks!
It's Mooresville NC and the AAA guy recommended this place called Advanced transmission care off HWY 150.Yep-at least exchange isn't still below 1.5.
It was actually $2500-$3000 not as high as I said originally. We also checked with Ford dealer re any recalls but there weren't any that hadn't been sorted and none related to transmission
Never had a Ford before-don't think will be having one again!
Wish I could get my Seat Leon Cupra over there somehow.
