Despite the news media's bias lying made up tire attack, the Explorer was the best SUV under $60,000. China couldn't produce an Explorer if they wanted to. Hell, toyota still can't make an suv or truck worth having!
12Go - your amazing bias comes through over and over. The Explorer once defined the mid-size SUV category. Since it was introduced in 1990 it has declined in quality and sales from over 400,000 per year to a little over 100,000 per year. By any measure except yours - the Explorer is middle of the pack and no more. In 6 cylinder is it underpowered and thirsty. In V8 it is still thirsty. That probably explains why used Explorers are so cheap. The tires were a problem - but Ford chose them and recommended relatively low air pressures - a contributing factor.
Hence the popular nickname Exploder.
Sayantsi - I have seen the Raptor up close at a dealer. It looks terrific though I think better in a dark color. The one I saw was black.
it's sharp, ill give it that, unfortunately it's still a ford.
Meaning?
Besides the fact that Ford's quality now exceeds it's Japanese counterparts, a Japanese pickup trick will never have the same aura that a tough American truck has.
he must mean best SUV under $60K were they that had one of the largest tires recall in history and that ford did nothing for the first liltte bit but sit back and do nothing hell they still even sold trucks with the faulty tires still on them if thats the best SUV I wonder what the worst is. LOL
I see you guys actuly believed the lies of the biased media. But hey, the stats are what they are, and the facts are that per 1000 vehicles built, the Explorer was and still is the safest under 60K mid sized SUV. Guess toyota should be commended for never having to tell about their come apart yokahomas that had twice as many bad tire accidents?

I agree the V6's were under powered, but I've never seen a toyota v6 keep up!! And I guess getting 20 mpg out of the v6 was bad, so the 15 mpg out of the toyota v6 was good?
Of course it's clear I had nothign to do with choosing the engines, I would have put the 514 crate engines in the Explorer!

Meaning, my preference is not with Ford. I worked on them enough to know better. I can't tell you how many rear axles and drive shafts had to be replaced when the new platform first arrived, for vibration issues.
I'll take a Chevrolet over a furd or an imported truck any day, however the 2010 dodge with 10,200lbs towing capacity and rear coils is a sweet driving truck with a pretty decent interior

dude do you just make your numbers up head or what. heres what a 98 toyota 4 runner would put down for mpg ala Fuel Economy and I will compare it to an exploder Toyota 4Runner 4WD
6 cyl, 3.4 L, Manual 5-spd, Regular
MPG
(hwy)18
(city) 15
Ford Explorer 4WD
6 cyl, 4.0 L, Manual 5-spd, Regular
MPG
(hwy)18
(city) 14
it says no where that the explorer was pulling down 20MPG's in the late 90's maybe today but not back then by the looks of it they were pretty even when it came to fuel economy almost dead on with each other

Any wander thy the big three are in trouble with this type of thinking in the US auto industry. Living the fairy tale and going bankrupt.
