My wife, two young sons and I are thinking of making the move to leave the desert and into Fort Collins. We are actually taking a trip to visit the area next month. Any thoughts to convince us to make the move or not? We both work, (IT specialist, and Physical Therapist) and were wondering what area of town to check out, quality of school systems, safe neighborhoods, or anything else we ought to know. Thanks for any feedback.

Not sure if this info is too late for your trip out here but I thought I would try anyway. Almost all of Fort Collins is "safe" in comparison to Las Vegas. The congestion and transients in Vegas is on a different spectrum than Fort Collins. I know this first hand because my parents just transplanted out to Las Vegas and we seriously thought about following. Keep in mind that the cost of living in Fort Collins is really high (thanks to the BEST PLACES TO LIVE awards the city has received). With that though comes some of the most educated neighbors and best school system.
If you are serious about moving in the area there are surrounding towns, Loveland, Greeley, Windsor that may be cheaper real estate. When you research, do it on the whole area not just Fort Collins. Your results maybe more appealing.

The town is not too big for you to see a representative sample of the whole thing on your visit. Be sure to see Old Town and drive Harmony and South College. Those are the two primary commercial districts.

Newer housing in mostly located on the south end of town. You will encounter student housing near campus.

Overall, the school district scores well in comparison to many other areas of the state and country, no matter which school your children attend. The scores do, however, vary within the city. A couple of resources to check out for school info include:
Colorado Schools - Colorado State School Ratings - Public and Private
Colorado Public School Rankings

In the extreme south part of Fort Collins, children will attend Loveland Schools, which are also well respected.

You will enjoy the cooler summers here, but do plan on having some cold winter days.

Enjoy your visit.

Mike, I've noticed in my research that the avg. January high in Ft. Collins is only 7 degrees cooler than where I live now (Memphis area). Of course, the lows are much lower, but that is because the air is drier. We do get cold weather and a rare snowfall, but your area seems to get a lot more sunshine in the winter time, a big plus. We don't get much snow because along with the moisture comes warmer air and we get misty, cloudy, chilly, gloomy days. My guess is that a lot of your snowfall evaporates away pretty quickly. Look forward to seeing you this fall.

We moved from Fort Collins to Virginia Beach. We've been here almost a year & have started our plans in relocating back to Fort Collins. We're also bring my husbands' parents with us, whom have lived in rural West Virginia all their lives but loved Colorado while visiting. As a whole, we have discovered that the grass was greener in Colorado...lol. Not literally, but you know what I mean.

Appreciate the input from all of you. We actually will be out there in early August to check out not just Fort Collins, but Denver as well. Im glad to hear that we will be able to get a good idea of a representation of teh cities, in just a few days. Hopefully check out some neighborhoods in each city as well as home prices.
