We just spent a wonderful week vacation in the Estes Park/RMNP area. We currently live in Reno, NV and really like the Reno/Lake Tahoe but are considering a move to the Denver area. With my job I have travel extensively so I can live anywhere as long as I am close to an airport.

The family really liked Estes Park but I would prefer to be within an hour of Denver Intl Airport. What other areas should we research that have:

1) Small town feel
2) LOTS of trees and mountains (we went through Ft Collins and really didn't like how flat it is)
3) Hopefully within an hour or less of the airport
4) Reasonable real estate prices (reasonable for us is $250 per square foot or less, ie 2500 sf house for $625,000 or less)

We would like to be close to ski mountains, hiking, horseback riding, etc.

Thanks a bunch!

Louisville is not in the mtns, but is hilly and meets the rest of your criteria. Perhaps also Golden, though it has a rep as more expensive.

Check out Evergreen.

It is kind of like the North shore of tahoe/incline village/truckee etc...... but with out the lake. Evergreen is a bedroom community of mostly families, not a vacation area. I almost bought in Tahoe before moving here.

I posted some pics of evergreen in this thread.

Leadville vs. Evergreen

625k is plenty to find a very nice house. Houses go for around 150-200 sqft on average.

You could also find horse property if you wanted.

The drive to denver airport is around 1hr 10min. if you live in central evergreen. Little shorter if you are closer to I70, a little longer if you live farther out.

Good Luck in your search!

Also Boulder, right at the foot of the mtns. Expensive for the area, but you can find an affordable house if you look.

Thank you all for the ideas! We will research Bolder, Evergreen (we really like Truckee minus the prices), Louisville, and Golden.
