I plan on moving to Fort Collins area from Henderson, Nevada. I'm orginally born and bred in the chicago suburbs. I am concerned with finding a good job in the area. I understand it's super competetive, and I watch the city websites, coloradoan papers, careerbuilder, and craig's list.
My career history: graduated college with BS in biology. With my office admin experience and project management that last several years, I have found I'm excellent in the office scene, but it's hard to find a good paying job as an administrative assistant, etc. I've been in environmental (both conservationally and hazardous waste/contamination) consulting, biological surveys, desert tortoise monitoring, and currently taking a crash-course in being a desert botanist for a particular project. To make it more interesting, I just got nationally certified as a ABC dog trainer. Any advice/stories on your own job searches? Inteviews for out-of-staters, how did you get your employment? |

Don't rule out state or federal jobs, which usually do not advertise in the venues you listed. You won't get rich, won't get stock options or profit sharing, but the checks don't bounce and that includes the pension checks.
Fed jobs are in http://www.usajobs.com Google should work for state, county, or city jobs in this state. Having a local address/phone seems to work well for getting interviews. Some guys on C-D claim they get local phone numbers, put it on vonage and calls come to them wherever they are, looks local to the calling party. Best of luck to you. You're gonna love Colorado.... s/Mike |

Awesome idea. Thanks! I already have use Vonage as my home phone line in California so it'd be trivial to add a Colorado number to the account when it comes time to start job hunting.

I see these jobs posted in the newspaper all the time. Go to Coloradoan.com and look at the jobs there. Also look in the Loveland Herald (not sure what the web address is).

The unemployment rate here is low. But everytime our company runs an ad we are swamped with responses - many from overqualified people. My guess is that people do find work here, but often not at the level they are looking for. The city does not promote job development.
