I moved to Fort Collins about 2 years ago from the South and was really worried by what I read on these forums!! I kept reading how everyone here hated newcomers and how unfriendly everyone was. Ignore this crap!!!! People here are so friendly.....I had a 10 minute conversation in the grocery store line today. I have made more friends here than anywhere else I've ever lived. My neighbors are wonderful, and we are good friends with many of them. My kids get invited on playdates, and we get invited out with other couples at least twice a month. I have been made fun of a few times (by jerks) for my accent, but most people love it. My biggest complaint here is aggressive drivers.....I had a woman purposely try to hit my car last week in a parking lot and she admitted to it! What a moron! Drivers here are not friendly and polite. I really love how pedestrian and bicycle friendly Fort Collins is. I also love that I can take my dogs so many places....you don't get that so much in the South. Please don't let the naysayers on here discourage you!! Fort Collins is a great town!

Nerda,

Don't be put off by any negative remarks you hear about Fort Collins. This town is fantastic. It tends to be the folks that resent the town's progress that don't want to engage with you. Everybody else will ask you "What took you so long to move here."

People love their beer, bikes and dogs. There are a number of dog parks scattered around town too.

Rentals are hard to come by, especially in this market. Homes in the $180K to $300K fly off the shelf, there is a real shortage. If you are looking to buy, call a Realtor, come spend a long weekend exploring, then make an offer on a house. Seriously, I haven't seen a market this competitive since San Francisco during the dot.com boom.

There is a very lively restaurant and bar scene. There are definitely some niche markets to get into, but Fort Collins doesn't need another sandwich shop, pizza joint etc. The college crowd is well catered too. There is also a growing number of quality food trucks entering into the equation!

Cheers. You will love it here.

Or people from any city bigger than 150k.

I don't really think Portland has very bad traffic. It's all relative.

You're absolutely right on with this comment! Whenever I complain about the traffic here in Bend, I have to remember where I'm at. It's annoying when you have to sit through one traffic light. But then again, I rarely have to. All I have to do is go to a city bigger than here to realize how light our traffic is.

True Delta, which is why the laughable debate of Fort Collins traffic will never die.

Hi there, I'm quite new at this blogging thing. Juliemac .... I was very interested in talking to you as my husband and I are in our late 40's and are from LA and are seriously considering a move to Fort Collins. Three years ago we traveled to Fort Collins and came very close to purchasing a home that we fell in love with. Now three years later (with 3 year old twins) we find ourselves considering relocating there. We are concerned about jobs.... my husband is a Substitute teacher for LAUSD and I was laid off three years ago. The other issue we had was the distance from the home we fell in love with to the local hospital (having children makes it pretty scary). We LOVED everything about Fort Collins; however we came across some info regarding the Natural Gas drilling that has been done there. I'm sure jobs are probably hard to find just as they are here in LA.
