Default Fort Collins rental houses in foreclosure?

Hi, I was wondering if anybody had tips on how to avoid renting a house in Fort Collins that is or might soon be in foreclosure. We're moving there in about a month for my job and would like to rent a house for 6 months to a year before buying to get a feel for where we want to live longer term. I've seen various horror stories of people renting a house only to be kicked out one month later because the landlord neglected to mention that he had no intention of paying his mortgage...

Any tips on how to spot this situation before signing a lease?
