The wife and I are planning a week in the are in late winter. Is it realistic to expect to be able to drive from Ft. Collins to Breckenridge during that time? Best route? Amount of time to make drive?

Shouldn't be a problem at all, but will depend on whether there happens to be a storm rolling through at the time. Your route is very simple, down I-25, over I-70 and down CO-9. I'd recommend an AWD, then you don't have to worry about the chain law or sliding all over the place as long as you drive carefully. Chances are all these roads will be totally clear. About 3 hours.

If you want to take your time and want a more scenic route, you can head over to Estes Park or Lyons and cut down the Peak to Peak Highway (CO-7, 72, 119). Along the way you can see Nederland and Central City. 4-5 hours.

Thank you for the information. We are looking forward to this trip. We don't get alot of snow here, but iI have driven in it when I lived in Oklahoma.

Try to plan your drive from here to Breck on a weekday after 10:00am. The weekend ski traffic will make the drive quite unpleasant and somewhat longer. Leaving later in the morning helps you to avoid the morning traffic jam going into North Denver.
