Good evening! I will probably be starting a job in Fort Collins in February 2007 - but I want to live in a place that offers similar close-in hiking trails like Boulder. However, I think that might be difficult, so as an alternative, I was wondering if anyone commutes from north of Boulder/Longmont area to Fort Collins? Is this realistic to plan to do something like this particularly when it snows? I know I can hop on I-25 all the way, but is this realistic? I think it is only about 35-40 miles. Any ideas?? Thanks!

I commute from Longmont to Loveland which admittedly isn't as far but pretty close. I go up Hwy 287 rather than all the way out to I-25 because that route feels like a very long way around and 287 is a fairly fast road with just a few traffic lights along the way. The slowest part of the journey is probably going thro downtown Loveland but even that's not too bad at 7am. I've only had to stay home cause of weather once this Winter and that was 2 weeks ago when we had 6-8" snow overnight and I have a small car. Where in Fort Collins will you be working - north or south end?

Default Thanks

If things work out, I will be commuting to the North end - Prospect Rd or there abouts. When I drove up 287 before, I did that during the late afternoon so of course, it was quite busy. I am sure, as you said, 7 am is pretty quiet. Do you know any areas that I should stay away from in Loveland as far as apartments go? I have heard a mixed bag of comments so I suppose it is really up to individual as to what is safe or not. I am looking for relative quiet (not too many parties, college kids, etc.) I would assume that would be east of the city (Loveland, Longmont etc.), right?

thanks for all the good info - I appreciate it.

Where I live in N Longmont is right on Hwy 66 which leads straight to 287 and that's really convenient. It's a nice quiet complex with fairly spacious apartments at reasonable rates, but frankly the management is next to useless and the maintenance of the area leaves a lot to be desired! They do offer 9-month leases tho so I guess you could take a short one and then spend time exploring the area for something better. But I think you could find something nicer nearer to work. I don't know Loveland but colleagues live out at Centerra and that seems ok and it's right by I-25.
