Default Diversity Acceptence Question

I work for an aerospace company that has a office in Cheyenne,WY it has been tossed around that I would be a good fit managing one of the shops. I have visited the area many times and like the Ft. Collins area which seems to be a closer fit to the area that I am currently living in.

I and my wife are both 20 something full blooded Indians and not the Native American ones, the Asian ones (I was born and raised in the US though), and I am a Muslim. I don't plan to stay forever, but I didn't want to feel like, or be treated like I was unwanted. My wife does not wear the traditional Hijab style head dress, but she does like to wear her traditional Indian dresses every so often. I understand some stares, but do you think anything negative will come of this?

I love where I presently live, but see this as a huge career opportunity, but don't want to do it if my family will be ill treated.

How would we be treated in Ft. Collins?

I think you would be suprised at how many people live in Fort Collins that have your same believes and background. I think Fort Collins is a very accepting community. There will always be those few that are ignorant, but for the most part everyone around this area are good, understanding people. You will love it here and I for one welcome you to our community.

Come on... let's be serious here...
What do you *really* think is the worst that will happen to you in Fort Collins? Do you actually think that because you are a Muslim from India, and your wife wears Indian dresses occasionally, that something terrible will happen? Good grief.

I think pretty well. The only negative story I have to share is that someone threw a rock through a window at the local Islamic Center shortly after 9/11. The Islamic Center did receive a lot of support after the incident from the community, police, and leadership. I was friends with several Muslim graduate students who told me they liked Fort Collins because it seemed like a safe environment for their children. I knew a number of Muslims who were very public in practicing their faith, and in one case preaching the faith (member of a tablighi group), and all of them seemed satisfied with their treatment in Fort Collins.

Overall, there's a sizable community of both South Asians as well as Muslims in Fort Collins, mostly connected to CSU. You can participate as much or as little as you like. Away from CSU, Fort Collins is not a very diverse town, but its population is worldly enough to accept virtually any religion or lack thereof.

I think most of Colorado in fact, hold that laid-back attitude of where, you do what you do, I do what I do, we agree to disagree attitude, so they don't really care much about differences and if they don't like you for whatever difference, they won't bother you. It's hard to tell sometimes in Colorado, but Fort Collins is a place that literally has no crime, asides from petty thefts.
