Spoken like a true realtor.

Fort Collins is windy and well above the national average for wind both in frequency and speed.

Well I am not a relator and I don;t think FC is that windy. What is your frame of reference? That would be a better questions. In comparison to Cheyenne - yep it definitely isn't that windy. I am originally from New Orleans, LA and I am not sure where that city falls according to "windy cities" - my guess is pretty low. I personally have no problem with the wind here. Sure there are windy days, but the majority in my mind are not. Could be that I enjoy the area much more for its other attributes and the wind is not a major deterrent for me - I'll take some wind over 95% humidity any day.

Overall, I still would say it really isn't that windy. But again take into account that "frame of reference" question from eariler (or your tolerance for wind of any kind). Now if you get farther East out on the plains or go North into Wyoming then all bets are off.

That was not my realtor side speaking. That was my 25 years living in this area. You should not judge all realtors before you meet them, some of us are upstanding citizens that do not lie to our clients just to get a deal!!!!

No the city itself is not normally windy. However if you get on the outskirts of Fort Collins it can be windy quite often.

I would agree the post above mine. I've lived in Fort Collins for 8 years and don't recall very many windy days. There have been a couple of memorable strong ones that have broken branches off trees, but those certainly don't happen all the time in the city. East of I-25 where I have friends living on large lots with the nearest neighbor being a ways off, they can get some windier days. There's nothing blocking the winds out there.

The whole front range is known to be windy. However, the wind tends to be the strongest right up against the foothills, like in Boulder, Golden, and Morrison further south, and then again further east, out on the plains. In the middle, there's a "sweet spot" where the winds are relatively mild, where the mountains provide some shelter. Fort Collins sits pretty comfortably in that sweet spot, except for maybe a few of the subdivisions on the far west side of town touching the foothills.

Fort Collins is the 5th windiest city in the US (with populations over 50,000). To say that one part of town is windy while another is not does not make sense to me. It is very windy in FC.

Terrain, elevation, shielding (trees and buildings), and where the storms are coming from makes a big difference in wind speed and how it affects your lifestyle. In central FC it is pretty much 'breezy', but you can walk around normally (without holding onto something) and you don't have cast iron lawn furniture blowing by your window.

It was always so nice to get back to LaPorte or Wellington after my 850 mile trucking route through WY, NE, SD. FC is definately mild in comparison to REAL wind. I did wake up one morning out near Masonville, and my neighbor's house was gone... blown away... it was a 'new modular' circa 1970, BEFORE the required straps and anchors.

It is all relative... If you need a little wind, go to Laramie or Boulder, but FC is pretty mild. In my current location we have 4 climatic and wind zones within 7 miles, all depending on elevation and width of Columbia Gorge (which dumps the air from Eastern WA and OR to allow storms to come in) We get lots of 80 mph wind and freezing rain.

In FC, you will likely get your strongest sustained winds at the base of the foothills, west of town.

You must be thinking of Cheyenne, where the average daily wind speed is somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 mph. Fort Collins isn't all that windy, although occasionally during the winter the Chinooks can be beastly.
