Old Town Shopping
Can Old Town residents meet daily shopping needs by walking or biking to nearby stores -- hardware, post office, pharmacy, grocery, library, etc?

Can you elaborate a bit? Is there a good-sized grocery store in the Old Town/Downtown area? Would you say that the Downtown is predominantly restaurants/bars/shops that cater to the students? Or more the traditional, practical Main Street that so many towns no longer have?

I would not say that the shops just cater to students. There are many specialty stores in that area. However there are many restaurants and bars also. There is a pharmacy in the area and an ace hardware. You would have to bike a little ways to get to either super walmart or albertsons. It would not be an unreasonable bike though. There is also a safeway at the corner of mulberry and college. So there is a wide variety of shops in the area.

Well, I would agree with what Tom has said. The post office is 2 or 3 blocks west of College. There is also a food co-op on Mountain. But the majority is made up of bar and restaurants. I do know some people that do live down town in the "lofts" that are being built up in old town. The biggest problem I see for some of those people is parking and having your car trashed from the bar crowd. I know of two people whom had their cars damaged in the parking lot. Plus the 3 P's after a good weekend and there is also the homeless to deal with too.

jom - there is a Safeway (grocery store) on College and Mulberry. Plus plenty of other shops in Old Town. You would be happy there.

Thanks for your help. We're trying to find a place that offers the walkability of our lovely, 1920s era Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City, MO-- but with a better climate! Planning to come take a look in a few weeks.

Just a side note if you are looking in the old town area for housing you are going to pay a higher price for it. Housing in that area is very popular and more valuable.
