Default Moving from the beach to Ft. Collins

I've lived in Coastal NC for most of my life and have decided it's time to live in the mountains. I am considering the Ft. Collins area or Portland OR. I am 30 yrs. old and single. I am a 6th grade science teacher. Before I start asking too many questions (as I'm new to this forum), I would like to get a few general opinions of the Ft. Collins area. How hard is it to find a teaching position there? Is it a fairly easy place to meet new people? I'd be moving with just my dog!!

I'm not in the Education field, but from what I hear it is very difficult to find (full time w/benefits), but one thing I will tell you is that I just moved here less than 6mo from California and I feel that it's very easy to meet people. You just have to be the one to go up and introduce yourself. I'll tell you another thing too, I love this forum. Before I moved I got tons of advice on housing, people, and employment. The later really proved beneficial. I took everyone's advise and had a job waiting for me when I finally moved. I think that is the wisest thing you can do before moving anywhere.

My neighbor got a job in the Greeley school district without a problem. It sounds like it was a rough school but it was a starting point for her. If you are 30 and single I would not live right in the mountains as they can be very desolate. Fort Collins is along the front range. My wife moved here when she was in here in 2000 when she was in her mid 20's and she did not have a problem finding friends or things to do.

I just moved here a month ago from southeastern Virginia and I'm now teaching elementary school here in Fort Collins. It is an awesome school district and so therefore a little tricky to get a job here. I was told by my principal that for every classroom teacher opening, there's about 80-100 applicants. There are five new teachers at my school and I'm the only one without a Masters Degree, so I think they look highly on that as well. So it's not the easiest school district to get into, but it is possible!!!! I did, so don't get discouraged and if need be, there are a lot of school districts surrounding Fort Collins that you can easily commute to. If I can help you out with anything, please let me know...
