Gee, I don't know what to visualize now. Pompous Chicano Mormans? I need to get there f-a-s-t, I gotta to see this place.

Seriously, I know it's impossible to describe a place without overly simplifying or making inaccurate characterizations. My suppositions are all probably incorrect and, at best they might serve as a loosely formed baseline.

I'll have to get there and draw my own conclusions and find out what's tolerable and not. It's fun to talk about, but until I'm on the ground I won't really know what Miami is really like. Some people say Iguana tastes like Chicken. I for one don't agree.

Some apparently love Miami but it seems to have it's own equal number of defectors. Which side I will be on in six months is anyones guess. It could be too, the first Cat 3 storm that get's within 1500 miles of miami finds us in Kansas.

It's a new adventure and I'm always up for those, so bring-it-on is my attitude here. I lived 3 months in a Volkswagon one time, so anything north of that experience and I'm pretty much golden.

chicanos? . Mexicans are rare in miami. Papo, Miami is Cuban so get with the program. the only thing we have in common with mexicans is the Spanish language. That's it. We don't look like mexicans, we don't act like mexicans, we don't listen to the same music, we don't watch the same TV, we don't eat the same food.

Ok, thanks. We have not started looking south. We have been looking only north, Hollywood, hallandale, Aventura and north Miami beach. We can go higher but not until we find where we want to stay.

We are thinking this first place will be nothing more than an extended stay motel but one with a yard. It's just a place to sleep until we can find a place we want to "live". If it wasn't for the dogs we would have a million more options. Our situation is, what it is, so we are willing to make short term concessions.

whatever you if you have valuables, make sure you get renters insurance and an alarm. I know people who have moved and then their homes have been broken into the same month. Most likely friends or relatives of the landlord do the break ins.

Default Former South Floridian here - let me give my 2 cents!

Hola! Como esta?! ---> that's what you'll normally hear if you live in either Miami-Dade or Broward County. If you're looking for English speaking residents? Try Palm Beach County and up, up and away! 'Cause the fact of the matter is, South Florida is FILLED with international residents, whom just happen to speak Espanol, Creole, French, Putwa (spelling??), Russian, Portugese, and even a little Italian (from those stuck-up Argentinians who think they're better than other Latin Americans because of their Italian heritage). Yes, there are English speaking residents too, but in terms of intelligence? FOHGEDABOUTIT! After having lived there for almost 6 years.. well let me tell you! They are DUMB as a box of rocks. The only English speaking South Floridians with an ounce of brain are those that are not from Florida and they just happened to move there to get away from something in another state (usually taxes or debt).

Let's face it. South Florida is an international melting pot. If you hate Asians (as in moogoo gai pan), then you'll love it there because they are few and far between. Mostly what you'll find are people from the Caribbean, South America, a few Europeans and some from Asia (Russians mostly). Populationwise, Miami-Dade is mostly Cuban, especially the farther south you go into Miami. However, if you don't want to get shot, raped, robbed, carjacked, your a$$ beat for no reason, or simply made fun of for looking like a tourist or rookie to SoFlo, STAY AWAY from Liberty City, Opa-Locka, Hialeah (spanish ghetto), Little Havana, most parts of North Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, and hmmm there's a street that starts with an "S" near downtown Fort Lauderdale that's notorious for crime and drugs. I can't remember the name of the street, but if you move to Fort Lauderdale, you'll quickly learn it by driving down the block. You can't miss it by the overweight/toothless prostitutes hangin' on the corner, of the drug dealer that's disguised as a homeless bum talking to the prostitute (no he's not her pimp), and the run-down houses and mom & pop liquor stores every 2 blocks. It's a metropolitan area! What chu expect?!

Miami-Dade and Broward Counties got its bad rep mostly from the 80's, when it became the playground for the world's leading drug cartels. There are still a lot of Colombians that live there, but now they mostly just come to America to seek a better life. The Colombians I met were all working-class people who are college-educated in their home country, AND came here to fulfill their dreams. Course, most of the females are there to snag a cute or not-so-cute American man with a U.S. citizenship, who is desperate to get some bootay, and willing to walk down the aisle about 2 months after meeting. Did anyone ever see the movie "Green Card"? Furthermore, after the death of Pablo Escobar, Colombians really don't have time to worry about how many grams of coke are in their purse (::cough cough:: Paris Hilton).

Anyhoooo, now on what I recommend you do if you're serious about moving to SoFlo. When I lived there, because I have very discriminating taste, I always chose homes as far east as I could get. Rule of thumb: the closer to the Atlantic you are, the better and safer the neighborhoods. Acutally, let me correct that: everything all the way east and all the way west are great areas. The areas inbetween could be sketchy. Nu Yawkerz are primarily in the Boca Raton area because that's the thing to do! Boca Raton (the mouth of the rat, loosely translated) is a very white, jewish area and they all have money. Not super rich like the super wealthy of Palm Beach County, but rich enough to own a home in New York and Florida. The Nu Yawkerz in Miami are usually retired, wrinkled and just want to enjoy their condo that they overpaid for and wait to die. They don't bother you. Fort Lauderdale is a very interesting place, primarily because of the amount of gays that reside there. Fort Lauderdale is nicer than Miami (not as cool as Miami, but not as ghetto either). Fort Lauderdale is also very gay-friendly. They even have a neighborhood there called Wilton Manors, which is ALL catered to the LGBT community. In fact, Fort Lauderdale ranks 2nd to San Francisco in terms of openly gay population. Fort Lauderdale is more white and they even have an exclusive area for the rich called Las Olas. When you drive down Las Olas Blvd, you'll see mansions on the left & the right. The residents there even park their yachts right in the boat slips. It's amuzing. You can even spot celebrities in the city sometimes like Dennis Rodman, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Dan Marino, a few famous porn stars, etc. Course, you'll see even more celebs if you go down to Miami Beach, but that's another story.

Fort Lauderdale is a nice area. It's not as dangerous as Miami and certainly not as fast-paced and party-centered as Miami. The areas I'd recommend in Broward County are Fort Lauderdale, Plantation, West Sunrise, East Hollywood, a few parts of Davie, Pembroke Pines (which was named one of the safest places to live in America, believe it or not), and Coral Springs. Other than that, FOHGEDABOUTIT!

Lastly, in terms of rudeness? Well, yeah. South Floridians can be rude. Reason being is that you're dealing with a lot of people who are not from there! Florida is a very transient state. Did you know that although stats claim that there are 1,300 new residents moving there every day, the fact of the matter is, they leave 7 months later! Florida offers beautiful real estate in a paradise-setting, offers zero state-income tax, and is a very debtor-friendly state. So my friends, if you become burdened with debt and want to hide from attorneys and collection agencies from attaching your assets? Florida welcomes and protects you with open arms! Well, really Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania do that, but you didn't hear it from me! In terms of drivers? South Florida was ranked #1 as having THE WORST drivers in the country. Google it to find out why! Jobwise, the unemployment rate in Florida is over 13% and the wages are LOW! Lower than the jeans the girls in SoFlo wear to show off their thongs! So all you Nu Yawkerz out there, stay up there! 'Cause you sho aint gonna get rich down there!

If you're looking for a 24/7, happy-go-lucky, smiling, positive experience, then take up residence at Disney World. However, I do warn you... living in Orlando SUCKS! Take care and good luck!

Love and smooches,
Worldy Looser <3 @ u

Clearly, I need Cuban 101. Is there a community college course? As someone who wouldn't know a Cuban from a house mouse, what are the Miami Cubans like? Honestly and all jokes aside, I really have no clue about that culture at ALL.

physically, we are either white, like spanish white, not german white. white skin, dark hair. others are black and others are mixed white and black. we don't look look like Mexican because we don't have indian roots. They were exterminated and replaced with africans. Our culture has a lot of african heritage like Santeria and african music and food.

we are mainly republicans, yeah shocka!!!! and we don't care for La Raza or those immigrant groups because all cubans are legal

spanish 101
it's Hola como ESTAS? estaSSSSSS
Boca is not mouth in this case. Boca is a water inlet, many sea locations have the word "boca" boca grande, boca chica, boca del mar, boca de iguanas, boca damas. rat's mouth in spanish is "la boca de la rata" mouse is raton, not rata.

Thanks for that, we don't care what someone looks like as long as they are civil. We don't want to get killed over there either. Maybe you could be our first Cuban American friend?

I'll say something that some may find interesting here. My son is a sales rep. He looked at store sales in all the Miami area. The top two stores with the most sales were Hialeah and Doral. That in itself is not very interesting, but what is interesting is that those two stores seemed to have the most people with the best credit rating. He could tell that by which payment plan they selected. Only very good credit get's certain payment plans and he could see that in the data.

The reason this is important to him is he get's paid off the payment plan "type" so it's in his best interest to know and that's why he picked those two stores as job candidates. He didn't know the ethnic makeup of the neighborhoods at all, he just looked at numbers and payment plans. They could have been Martians over there for all he knew.

What that says about anything I don't know, but it's the truth as I understand it. Sales are very good over there and credit scores don't lie.

Wait. I'm confused. I thought you wanted to move to Fort Lauderdale or somewhere up in Broward County?? Now, you're talking about Miami?

Okay, I'll make this short, sweet and stupid. If you're going to live in Miami-Dade, the only areas I would recommend are Aventura, Sunny Isles, Miami Beach (however, parking is going to be a nightmare for you unless you can get a home with a designated parking spot), Miami Lakes, Doral, Coral Gables, Miami Springs, and Kendall (way too far from everything). Everything else is not an area I would put my worst enemy in. If you want to live downtown, then the Brickell area is very nice, but expensive.

If you are undecided and want to be close to both Fort Lauderdale and Miami? I would live either in south Broward County such as East Hollywood or Hallandale Beach, which is cheaper than places in Miami-Dade. Or if you want to splurge a little and live in a white, jewish area.. give Aventura a whirl. Or even try Sunny Isles, which has a very large Russian population, just like Hallandale Beach.

Depending on what your monthly limit is, you're looking to pay over $1500/month in rent. Personally speaking, places I've lived are Fort Lauderdale, Aventura, Hallandale Beach, Miami Beach and Miami. I've always lived east of US1, which if you look at my other post, I mentioned staying closer to the Atlantic Ocean puts you in a much nicer and safer area. Good luck.

Love and smooches,
Worldly Loser <3 @ u
