As far as I was taught, and I was taught Spanish from Spain... Como estas is when you're speaking with someone you already know; someone familiar, like a friend. DUH! I have Colombian friends who are college educated and even they told me the same thing! I am not fluent in Spanish but I know enough to understand what's spoken to me. I find the Latin countries where they speak the best Spanish are from Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, and Costa Rica.
Latinos who are from the Caribbean speak HORRIBLE Spanish. You are Cuban, I'm guessing, because you live in Hialeah and think it's the bomb diggity. Girl, I've been there before because I dated a Cuban who lived in Miami Lakes for 5 months. And then I ended up dating ANOTHER Cuban who lived in Bal Harbour several months after that who was half white, half Cuban. Even she admitted Cubans don't speak proper Spanish. Don't you normally say "Como 'ta?" I think I've made my point on that.
As for what Cubans look like? I am not latin. I am white. I can only give my opinion. However, I will say Cubans are a hell of a lot better looking than Mexicans. Matter of fact, some Cubans can even pass themselves off as a white person. Simply because back in the day, there was a migration of Russians and even Germans that moved to Cuba. I guess on those days/nights when they dealt with hurricanes and the hot weather, there was nothing to do but bump uglies with the local latinos/latinas. When you mix the two, mmmm beautiful babies are created. I currently reside in San Diego and no matter which way your head turns, there's a Mexican. Most Mexicans have a darker complexion, black hair, very dark eyes, and short. There are Cubans who are tall, have lighter skin, blue or green eyes, and lighter colored hair. Having experience dating Cubans, most of them are attractive, not very intelligent, but their food is delicious and oh, let's not forget.. you can always tell when you're inside a Cuban home.. everyone is yelling when they talk. They're not angry; that's just the way they are! LOUD! I used to eat at this Cuban cuisine on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach all the time AND it was very inexpensive. Eating there got me addicted to plantains. Love their food!
I've never been crazy about Mexican food and prefer Cuban food over it any day. In any case, the good thing I will say about both cultures are that both Cubans and Mexicans are very nice people. Well, the ones that want nothing to do with drugs. I've never had a problem with either of them. And just an FYI to those wondering about just how far a Mexican can get in life? Google Carlos Slim. He's one of the top 5 richest men in the world, and he just so happens to be from Mexico! Those are Mexican bragging rights that no Cuban in this world has ever accomplished. Well, on second thought.. Cubans can brag about Cameron Diaz. She's half Cuban.
Love and smooches,
Worldly Loser <3 @ u
Well, I'll eat about anything that doesn't move too fast except some of the things the Chinese eat. (I don't think even the Chinese really eat some of that) I love Mexican food though, we don't have true Mexican food here, it's called TexMex, close but not really. I'll sure give Cuban food a good downing, I can be a pretty adventurous eater and love to try new things to eat. I like to eat where the locals eat, and street food too.
As long as I don't get mugged over there, I'm cool with whatever. I"m too old to give a damn what other people do to themselves and old enough to care what they do to me. I have a son to think about too in all this. It's all about "us".
As far as the mixed languages, I have had some experience with that in Central America. Some of the places I went didn't speak very good Spanish and I didn't speak their native language either or good Spanish. Somehow we got through it. If you go to Belize they speak a form of the Queens English and as a Texan it took a little while to tune my ears "ya'll".
My realtor in Hollywood is Italian, she moved to Canada and learned French, then moved to NJ then to soflo. She carries accents from ALL her areas. I can understand about 95% now but I have learned to listen closely. I love her enthusiasm and passion for life and I find her dialect interesting.
Cubans? Fine, honesty I don't care about nationality. I'm a German Irish French Texan mix myself. What do I care? My business is people, my son's business is people. We like most people and get along just fine with most people.
The thing that has me most disturbed is the crime. I admit that has me a little spooked. It's our safety at stake here all kidding aside. That''s one part I will not compromise and hope to find some solutions before landing in Miami.
If you're concerned about something bad happening to you, don't. Like any other major city, as long as you don't go in the bad areas, you'll be fine. I've lived in New York, California, Virginia and Florida. I never had problems in any areas I've lived because I stayed clear of trouble. If you don't go in the bad areas or associate with sketchy people, you'll be fine. Good luck.
If you don't mess with drugs or people that do down there you should be fine crime wise. Just use your street smarts and common sense. As for Cubans they happen to be one of the most educated (highest amount of college degrees amongst hispanics) and are more entrepenurial. You will find them to have an "Attutude" since they basically run Miami (or think they do) but don't worry since their bark is worse than their bite!
PS : the Doral area isn't bad at all but the traffic along NW 36st./NW 41 st can be brutal. The Federal Reserve , the HQ for Carnival Cruise and the Doral Country Club are all there west of the Palmetto Expressway.
Thanks for that, we don't care what someone looks like as long as they are civil. We don't want to get killed over there either. Maybe you could be our first Cuban American friend?
I'll say something that some may find interesting here. My son is a sales rep. He looked at store sales in all the Miami area. The top two stores with the most sales were Hialeah and Doral. That in itself is not very interesting, but what is interesting is that those two stores seemed to have the most people with the best credit rating. He could tell that by which payment plan they selected. Only very good credit get's certain payment plans and he could see that in the data.
The reason this is important to him is he get's paid off the payment plan "type" so it's in his best interest to know and that's why he picked those two stores as job candidates. He didn't know the ethnic makeup of the neighborhoods at all, he just looked at numbers and payment plans. They could have been Martians over there for all he knew.
What that says about anything I don't know, but it's the truth as I understand it. Sales are very good over there and credit scores don't lie.
look i'm not gonna sugarcoat it or make it sound like the day after tomorrow.
I know many people that work in sales. . Those 2 neighborhoods have a lot of immigrants that grew up in other countries. It is common knowledge that hispanics buy more than anglos and whites in Miami. Any sales person that works in Miami knows that or any national chain that targets Miami. It is tough if you don't speak Spanish to explain features and benefits so it would be much easier if your son spoke spanish. It's not impossible but he will need a transator and it could affect his sales numbers if his customers don't bring a bilingual person with him. It is frustrating when you can't communicate but people someohow make their sales. If the store has a bilingual person, the customers might wait on the spanish speaking person, they are used to waiting longer. You see them all the time giving up their turn in lines until they get someone that looks spanish speaking.
I had my alarm system installed by some white people from Utah, I had to ask them and they said it was difficult but people were always very nice to them but there were entire neighborhoods where no one spoke english and it was frustrating for them at times.
South Florida has a lot of rude, nasty people - and after a while it gets to you.
As metioned above, the western suburbs are nice to live in but the focus of life is NOT on the "Miami" of the brochures. I lived in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove before moving just west of the turnpike near Florida International University. East Dade and West Dade do not meet; I rarely went east when I lived west. I played golf at Doral, shopped in Kendall and Cutler Ridge (now Cutler Bay); and the beaches that I went to were in the Keys (Key Largo, just 35 minutes away).
Living in East Dade is like living in another country, West Dade feels like home...

to begin with Spaniards say "como estais"
yes Im cuban and we are majority here. we speak Cuban, not colombian. Get with the program again.
And Carlos Slim Helú, I think his last names gives us an idea of "how Mexican" this man's heritage is.
Dude "como ta" is like saying wuz up?, do you go around telling strangers "hey wuz up" No. IF you were around Cubans who told you that was proper then you need to improve your circle of cuban acquintences.
Ummm, no I don't associate much with Cubans who don't know how to speak. I normally hear them say stuff like that when I'm in casual restaurants or on the street.
I've only got about 3 Cuban acquaintances that I'm aware of whom all are either lazy or stupid. Case in point: 1. Cuban man (late 40's) who used to be married to my friend who came to this country, became a U.S. citizen and everytime he gets a job, he ends up quitting every 2-3 months. Why? Because he's lazy and hates working. That guy practices Santeria and claims to be psychic. ::snickers:: 2. Cuban younger man (late 20's) who brags about how he's going to make his first million and how he intends to spend it. He goes to Carlos Albizu University and can't speak proper Spanish or English, nor can he write an intelligible sentence to save his life. I'd swear he's dyslexic. He was fired for being stupid and incompetent. Big man on campus talking a big game, yet showed no action to get results. 3. Cuban young woman (26) who graduated from Barry University. Very cute girl, but dumb as a box of rocks. Trying to have an adult converstion with her is like pulling teeth. Everyone wonders just how in the world she ever graduated college because she has absolutely no general knowledge of anything. The only things she knows are BMW, Audi, Mercedes, the clothing store Zara, Urban Outfitters, and how to spot a rich jewish guy (which she hopes to marry one day soon). She's lazy too. Never shows up to work on time, is extremely inconsiderate of other's people's time, and really only cares about how pretty she looks, in addition to being completely irresponsible about her own finances.
I'm not saying 'all' Cubans are like that, but if you talk to South Americans and have a conversation about what they think of Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominican Republic... their opinions will not flatter you. In fact, based on conversations I've had with them, they really don't like to associate with people from that region. One time, I accidentally even said that they (South Americans) are hispanic and wow! They got offended! They said to refer to them as Latin, not hispanic. They think of hispanics as Mexicans, nothing more.
Anyhooo, just wanted to make that point. Don't get the wrong idea. I *like* Cubans. They're so damn cute, how could you not! However, nothing compares to the ultra-beautiful Colombian women of Bogota. Mmmm, gosh those people from there are super good-looking. If I wasn't afraid I'd get killed in that country, I'd move there! Ah well... wishful thinking.
S. Florida from what I have been told closely resembles L.A. in terms of mentality. Take that for what you will.
Accurate post as someone who lived in So Cal for nearly five years can attest .... poser attitudes and shallow people are never in short supply in both So Cal and South Florida .... but to be honest I never saw as many beautiful women anywhere in So Cal like I have in So Fla ... never saw anything like Lincoln Road on South Beach anywhere in Santa Monica , West Hollywood or especially Valencia where we used to live !!

Wordlyloser .... you obviously have not been to Medellin , Colombia ... the females are lovely .... much better looking than in Bogota ... trust me
There is tension and apparent dislike between South Americans and the more Caribbean Hispanics ( Cubans , Puerto Ricans & Dominicans ) ... my wife is Cuban American and we have talked about this many times before .... this Hispanic unity that you here about so much in South Florida is a pipe dream and un true .. it is sad .
