I see some lease/ buy options out there. I may try that until we iron out an area for sure.
Thanks again.
Boca and Weston are neck and neck for schools and it really depends where in Boca don't forget that again where in NY are you coming from? If you are coming from the Island or Westchester you may like these areas but I am not banking on it. Coral Springs and Parkland are just very BLAND, very, very, very BLAND - I can't say that enough! I would take Still's advice and go with Coral Ridge and if private schools are an option that place is damn near perfect! If I had to do it all over again - Cooper City would not be my starting point - I can't complain about schools but there is more to life than taking your child to school and I don't feel Cooper City or any City in FLL offers much of anything other than maybe downtown FLL. This is not a shot it is just my opinion. I too thought that none of the things that I am looking for right now were important as longs as my kids were in good schools but you realize all to soon that they are in fact very important. What ever "they" may be. I just caution you to move slowly with your choices and really map out what you would like from a community!

Chelsa there aren't many corner stores in Douglaston, Bayside, Little Neck, Murray Hill, Broadway Flushing etc. Not too mention sections of Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. The walkable areas are the sidewalks that take a kid to his friends home. I think your observations are limited to folks who come from the more urbanized areas which of course would also include Manhattan.
I also can't speak for many NYers, just the folks I have met in my 16 years here but most of them, by far, are quite pleased to be here and their kids adjusted quite happily to 4 season sports.

Where in Brooklyn and the Bronx are there no corner stores??????? I think when peopl are rehashing memories they may be forgeting some things. There are NO CORNER stores where I live in Cooper City NONE - Walgreens and CVS aren't Bodegas so to speak. I lived in Baysid and there were corner stores there. Lived in Flushing Corner stores there and Murry hill in NY - are you kidding??? I'm not saying a corner store on every corner you turn but a convenience store that you don't really have to drive to if you chose not to. And anyone of the places that you mentioned have a much more neighborhood type feel than any place I have been in - in Broward. I'm not knocking it here - but I really didn't think it would be as huge an adjustment as it has been and I want to impress upon the OP as a NYer who left just a few months ago and things are still very, very fresh in my head. I realize that it is possible I'm meant to be a NYer always - I'm not sure yet - I do know that there are things that aren't so great in NY but after coming to the other side - I also know that there are wonderful things about the city as well! Whether I return or not remains to be seen - I wish I could have had a crystal ball to foresee what my life would be like right now. The OP may love it here or not but I think I am a good source of info for the OP bein a very recent transplant.

I also third the Coral Ridge area of Ft Lauderdale. It's close to US1 and there are many, MANY places to shop and dine along US!.
What most NY'ers who haven't had to own a car soon realize, it is a must down here. If not to get around, but the fact it can rain at any given notice.
I live in Hollywood and love it. It also more laid back and I also grew up in the area. The schools my daughter went to were fine. She also got into UF even from public schools. She'll graduate this spring.
Back to Coral Ridge, it is very close to US! and anything on the east side of US! is prime real estate. Most of the homes are on canals with ocean access.
Additionally, Ft Laud has not seen the demographic changes the rest of Broward has seen over the past 30 years. Even Hollywood is starting to change.

Chelsa – I didn’t say there were no corner stores in the areas I named, Douglaston, Bayside, Little Neck, Murray Hill (Queens), Broadway-Flushing, Auburndale. I said there were not many. These areas all have sections that are zoned residential only, most with minimum lot sizes. In Queens there are many areas with sections zoned this way.
Commercial sites are only permitted on designated streets which are at the boundaries of the zones. Stores can easily be 4-5 blocks away. Not quite “corner”. Similar areas exist in all the boroughs, with the exception of Manhattan. In the Bronx the one that comes to mind is Riverdale, in Brooklyn areas of Flatbush although there are others in both boroughs.
Your statement “more often than not NYers from the boroughs are not happy in Broward" was kind of broad. I wanted the OP to see a different side i.e. there are ex-NYers who are pleased with their relocation and life style choice. Some of them are my neighbors. I am sure the OP will be fine. He is doing due diligence and moving slowly.

Thanks Hollie and Chels - I think people get drawn in by the aesthetics of the suburbs and dont realize how it really is. Weston is an easy choice at first look - but it gets old fast. After living in a very walkable area (my walkscore is 98) and living in a small older cottage home (really small and really old) I would never consider the suburbs at this point. If I HAD to move back to SFL - Coral Ridge would be my first stop - if you drive thru it looks questionable - but it holds alot of wealth and great elementary schools - their school is routinely among the top elementary schools in Broward.

I'm surprised you don't have Plantation on your list of potentials. As far as I know it's one of the best, most family-friendly suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Can't really elaborate though, 'cause I rarely go west of I95, but maybe some other member can help.

Actually Raf, I was clear when I said not all NYers - but most that I talked to are bored to tears in Broward - OP isn't from the boroughs so, he and his family will be just fine. And yes the areas you mentioned are very residential in NY but still within walking distance of a convenience store - and don't misunderstand me a convenience store doesn't make everything but the neighborhoods here are very different from those up North and I'm trying to give him a starting point where things are similar to his situation.

the only issue I have is that the public schools in Plantation are questionable at best. Why are the schools so crappy here? WHY! It is frustrating and so limiting on where you can live.
