We're Americans in our mid 40's looking to move somewhere sunny that's accepting of our Asian (adopted) children. We loved Hawaii in our pre-kids life but felt a bit too isolated, then lived in Seattle for many years and hated the dreary, rainy days between November and June. We're living in Germany right now.

I have a chance at getting a teaching job in a private school in Ft. Lauderdale where our 2 teen boys could attend for free as well so schools wouldn't be an issue. We've been to FL but only in the winter time as tourists up in the Orlando area. Our biggest motivation for moving to Ft. Lauderdale would be this job and the weather.

We're looking for:
-friendly neighbors in safe neighborhood where we can rent an apartment/ house for under $2000 and eventually a house on a large lot for under $450,000
-non-denominational church with good teen program
-excellent health-care
-good public library system

Would Plantation be a good area for us to start looking?

Unfortunately I've heard only negative comments about Southern Florida from friends who've lived there, such as "too much crime, too humid, bugs that are huge, rude people" etc. Hawaii was hot but not humid, we had cockroaches and termites but not really other big bugs and the crime scene was not in our neighborhood.

Yes, Plantation would be great. Im guessing you're considering American Heritage? My husband teaches there and our kids benefited from the free tuition for many years. Great school.

Other areas to consider would be West Davie and a bit further of a commute, Weston.

If you want a large lot and a home under $450K Davie would be your best bet.

Hawaii would be my first choice but Plantation is a very nice neighborhood. I lived up the road in Sunrise for years and Plantation city has its act together. You will not have any trouble finding a home for that money. Enjoy.

East Plantation has some very nice homes with huge, tree-shaded yards in your range, check out the neighborhood north of Broward Blvd and west of the Turnpike. We were just looking around that area over the weekend. I have no doubt that there are churches that would meet your needs. The Plantation Library is right there in the neighborhood, there are parks everywhere and it just seems like a good family friendly area, and unlike the many planned-community neighborhoods throughout South Florida, it has a more natural feel and the yards are spacious.
