Hi,

My wife and I currently live in Southern California but are looking to move to the Fort Lauderdale area for many reasons (cheaper than So.Cal, warmer weather, closer to family...).

Ideally, I would want to move if I get a job offer in the area. We both have graduate degrees (even though that doesn't really help in this economy), are both bilingual in Spanish (we both have ancestry from Spain and enjoy speaking Spanish) and we have savings to live for two years.

What are some relatively affordable and safe areas in the Fort Lauderdale region? We're not looking for night life but just laid back areas suitable for families. We're looking to rent maybe for 3 years (1400 USD/month max to start with) and purchase a home after that ( ideally 300k; 350k max).

What areas should we look at. From reading this forum, it seems like Weston, Cooper City and Davie are good options? Are there many companies located in Broward County or are most of them located in Miami Dade? Is the commute within Broward bad?

During hurricane season, is commute really difficult because of rainfall? We are looking for "safe" areas. Are the other areas really dangerous or do people usually blow things out of proportion?

Thanks a lot for your help.
