Not because me and all my friends are leaving. Because city officials came on NPR and said they had a brain drain problem, thats what I based my statement on. They are now trying to figure out ways on how to keep people here, one solution they put on the table was paying off a portion of students loans for every year a person remains here. The time limit on this would be no more than 8 yrs I think.

Do you have data on the immigration numbers for 2006? Census data would be useless on this though seeing as how they come around every 10 yrs and they aren't due back until 2009/2010 or something like that.

I deleted my post anyway. We should both delete. Actually thats a good post I wonder if theres a way you could merge that into your other one. Maybe edit, copy, paste?

But...I do have data.

Net international migration: +82,027
Here: +46 per 1000 residents
State: +30 per 1000 residents

Net internal migration: +36,632
Here: +21 per 1000 residents
State: +59 per 1000 residents

This is from city-data

It's too late now. Oh well, the moderator will probably clean this up. This is a pretty old thread anyhow.

My advice is to rent first then buy if you like it here. Im in Fort Lauderdale and cant wait to move to Atlanta. Problem is houses arent selling and even though I'll be taking a loss I still wont be able to sell quickly. The economy here is rough as well and traffic going south from Fort Lauderdale to anywhere in Miami is as bad as anywhere in Atlanta. The weather is great though aside from hurricane season - but honesly thats the only plus about living here. I'd love to trade my house for a place in Atlanta --- who knows?

Economically, it would be a bad move to go there without a job lined up, which may cause you to hang around ATL for awhile waiting for the right opportunity. But this isn't all bad, if you are looking to buy a house that may be the time you need for sellers/builders to come down in price so you can pick up something at a more respectable price than today.

The areas of town that I suggest are Aventura, Miami Shores, North Miami, and Hollywood.

There are still plenty of homes available in the Miami area especially if you are interested in a condo.

I agree that many people are leaving South Florida. It's not for everyone - particularly those who "need" or desire more homogenous surroundings. *But* if you welcome diversity, enjoy great food, great culture, music and the beach, this is a great area. It's really simply a matter of perspective.

My husband and I live in Parkland. We have a nice house with great neighbors and our children attend a wonderful school - we couldn't be happier. It is nothing like Tallahassee where I was raised - initially I was unhappy because I missed my hometown and the Southern feel. I could totally identify with many of the negative things said about the area. But once I kind of embraced where I was and appreciated the fact that it's not like any other place in the United States, I became proud of where I'm raising my family.

There are plenty of nay-sayers who have nothing good to say about South Florida (I think many of them frequent this board actually! LOL!) but during my marriage we've lived in Miami Beach, Aventura, Hollywood, Lighthouse Point and Parkland (at various points). My husband also lived on Key Biscayne when we were dating. I also lived in Davie during graduate school. So we've kind of been all over Broward and Dade, is what I'm trying to say. Again, it takes a bit of getting used to - but if you have an adventurous spirit, this can be an amazing place. It's all perspective. Good luck in your decision!!!

Where are your kids in school? We are considering Parkland and are torn between public and private.

My kids are at Riverglades. It's a great elementary school. I can honestly say that the public schools in Parkland are top notch. Still, lots of people still send their kids to private around here too: North Broward Prep (outstanding), Pinecrest (probably the best in Broward - they have a campus in Ft. Lauderdale and one in Boca), among others. Those 2 are probably the best private secular schools.
