I was talking to someone today about Las Olas and she said the last time she was in Ft. Lauderdale and went to Las Olas that it was dead and she couldn't believe how dead the area got. Is that true or was that just a fluke??? Is Las Olas really dead? She also mentioned living maybe Hollywood because of the proximity to Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Opinions on this at all??

It's busy on the weekends, dead (for the most part) on weeknights. A notable exception would be Rocco's Tacos on Tuesdays.

There is a complicated answer to this question. Las Olas is sort of divided into 3 main sections. You have the Riverfront complex/Himmershee District area which is located at the western end of Las Olas and continues onto SW 2nd St. This area consists of a bunch of dive bars and small clubs, and tends to attract a younger 18-24 crowd. Then you have the middle section of Las Olas which has higher end bars and clubs such as YOLO, Vibe, and Royal Pig. This section attracts ages 25-40 crowd and people dress nicer. Then you have the old Las Olas section further east where you find an assortment of restaurants, wine lounges, some bars, and small boutique shops.

Fort Lauderdale Beach is located about 1 mile east of the downtown on Las Olas Blvd. They have a trolley system that takes you back and forth for 50 cents each direction, or you can take a cheap cab ride. Fort Lauderdale Beach is more touristy, but does have a decent amount of bars. The selection of bars is not as great as Las Olas, but is a good change-up area to go out.

The other good area to go out is Seminole Hardrock Hotel and Casino. There are several large nightclubs there if you're into that and piano bars. There are often big events and big-name comedians and musicians performing at Hardrock. It is very vibrant on weekends.

The biggest nightlife areas in Broward in order of most to least would be:
1. Las Olas
2. Hardrock
3. Fort Lauderdale Beach
4. Hollywood

There are several other areas to go out in Broward County, but on a much smaller scale. Mizner Park in Boca Raton and Downtown Delray Beach are also very good areas to go out, but are a bit of a drive from Fort Lauderdale.

Miami is a whole different scene. It is sort of like the Vegas of the Southeast, except that its all nightclubs instead of casinos. There are thousands of places to go out on South Beach, Downtown Miami, Brickell, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove. Way too many places to name. Brickell is a great place to live if you can afford it. It is a downtown neighborhood with tons of tall highrise condos with amazing views. The downside is you have to deal with Miami, the people, the traffic, the crime, etc.

Dude, don't move to Davie. It is beyond white trash with some brown sprinkles on top. Downtown, las olas, the beach. I'll just warn you though. Florida is full of old people no matter where you go, it's gods waiting room. Certain bars and hours may attract the young folks, but there's always that orange skinned septuagenarian with his white, "tennis anyone?" Sweater tied around his neck and his 15 years past her prime Botox puffer fish faced, leather neck and fake tatas wife trotting around drunk with everyone on las olas. You can't escape old here. It smells like depends and bengay in the humid air.

Also, what colleges are in East Davie?

Hey, This is totally random, but I stumbled onto this board for the exact same reason. I moved into Ft Lauderdale last Saturday (less than a week!) to begin my job this week. I have a short term sublease through the end of march (about 6 weeks), which I intentionally found so that I could get these kind of things figured out before committing somewhere. I will be actively, first-hand exploring the same things you are questioning (since I moved here from North Florida with no contacts) and looking for a place ideal for mid-20's professionals. Feel free to email me with any questions, or if you are on the same time-frame, we could evaluate sharing a place to cut costs...

What are you doing in this forum? Do you live in Broward (or are moving to Broward)? Or at least have a proper, factual and correct knowledge (without overreactions or exaggeration) of the region? Don't take me wrong way please, I say that only because your last post in this forum was mostly trolling and false information - people proved that. You can't go around here doing that, if you're in violation of any section of the City-Data's T.O.S., you'll face the perspective repercussions/penalties stated there, it's simple.

That said, you can show the bad points of the area, definitely, there's quite a few of them (especially in neighboring Miami-Dade); but put it all on the line in a proper and civilized way, for everybody's (including you) good.

To the OP, for actual information, I think I forgot to talk about that: just search for U.S. Census info and there's the factual information about age (income, race/diversity, etc.) - also that CrimeMapping and Crime Reports sites (for crime info) - for specific areas down here, it's actually a good idea for you to take a look.
