I am moving down to the Miami area and I really like the North Miami Beach area east of Biscayne but I see that just north of Aventura is Hallendale Beach and then Hollywood. I am American with a very multicultural family -- my husband is from India, our children were born in the Dominican Republic. My husband and I both speak Spanish. We have two elementary school children.

I would like to get some information about the Hallendale Beach or Hollywood area vs. North Miami Beach in terms of best places to live. One thing about North Miami Beach I like is easy access to public transportation. My husband does not have his drivers license yet. Is there public transportation in Hollywood/Hallendale Beach that connects with Miami?

Hallandale is nicer than Hollywood. And a bit closer to Miami, if that matters.

Hollywood is the worst of those 3 areas. I would just live in North Miami Beach. It is the nicest and probably has the most living options. You are closer to Miami and South Beach. Hallandale is nice too and probably cheaper rent. I've had friends who lived there in the past.

There are nice parts of Hollywood (mainly the Lakes section east of US 1) and Hallandale, but there are awful parts, too. I think public transportation to Miami will be the biggest problem for you, though. What part of Miami do you need to get to?

Here's a previous thread on the subject that might help. It's 2 years old so I'm not sure how current the information is.

I see you're from Ponte Vedra Beach! My husband and I are planning to retire up there in a year or so. Can't believe you're leaving PVB for South Florida

That's funny about your comment on PVB. It's too quiet for me. Not enough culture. I know that people up here do not like Miami but I live in the Dominican Republic for 8 year and that is far crazier than Miami. I miss it but it was too corrupt and expensive. For me Miami gives me the feeling of living there again with a more practical US economy.

It seems like North Miami will be the best for us. I have a car but my husband doesn't have his license yet. He has a business selling hair extensions and that is a huge market for latinas so he need to be able to travel around the city.

I think North Miami Beach is only nice near the coast. From US1 going West, it is kind of dodgy looking.

It depends which part. But I agree that east of US1 is mostly nice. It is no different than any part of Broward County really. The same could be said about pretty much all of South FL except maybe Boca.

The public transportation is not great in Broward or Miami-Dade county. I think it would be highly beneficial to get a second vehicle if your husband will need to travel frequently.
