While he was sleeping someone broke in, stole his laptop, money, took his car keys, went into his car and took more money and left the keys in the door.
If he would have woke up while the person was in his apartment he could have been killed.
My point is, BE CAREFUL.

My home could get ransacked in a small town. Id be more worried about going outside and getting mugged in some of those neighborhoods.
And as far as bad areas, basically the entire city west of U.S.1 is suspect, except for a few nice (EXPENSIVE) pockets like Emerald Hills. The worst areas are off of Dixie Highway (just yuck!), Carver Ranches (stay out at all costs, worse in Broward), most of the S.R.7 corridor, and basically most of the city, there are a few western pockets that are alright, like Emerald Hills, Hollywood Hills, Park Rd corridor, but the only area that is consistent is east of U.S.1.

I am the opposite. Getting mugged on the street is a little safer only because there are more chances of people passing by. Someone coming in your home, ANYTHING can happen. I know a lady, someone broke into her home while she was sleeping and they Moderator cut: changed to" did something nasty" all over her pictures before they left. Again could you imagine what could have happened had she woken up?

That lady was on the news. Pretty disgusting. A burglary, however, is usually planned. In less it's a home invasion (which is essentially getting mugged in your home), the burglars most likely are coming to steal your stuff without bothering anyone. If they see anyone, they usually run, like a cockroach in the night stealing your food.
I have heard about home invasions in Hollywood, but not a lot of them. However, I have heard about little old ladies getting pistol whipped in some of Hollywood's swankiest neighborhoods. When someone is robbing you, they are usually desperate, often insane, and doing it at the spur of the moment. It's a crime of opportunity. A robber will do whatever they can do to get what they need, sometimes ending in death. Of course (thanks to a famous recent example) it can happen too if someones breaks in, but not really in your run of the mill burglary.
We should have a "Crime and punishment" forum, lol.

fort lauderdale,
you need to come visit brooklyn man. When and if I move back you should come visit me. I grew up with "stick up kids" those are guys who go around robbing people by gun point. These guys are not drug addicts and not insane. They are just out to make a buck and they figure sticking people up is the easiest way for them. *the mentality of scum bags, indeed*
P.S.
Did you hear about that lady in pompano whos house was broken into, they raped her Moderator cut: changed to "and other nasty things "
To the OP, be very careful man, down here can be extremely dangerous.

Thats NYC. Not Hollywood. Different culture, and there a lot of muggings there, and a very large amount of them are drug based. The crazy youth usually drive in from Miami-Dade (realize we don't have much public transport for the criminals to ride). I'm actually originally from Queens won't name the neighborhood, but yes you are right it's the mentality of scumbags. As far as that case, no I didn't hear about it, but A. it was Pompano, which is a city I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy, especially west of Federal, and B. It was still, more likely than not, a crime of passion. As disgusting as it was, I bet it wasn't random, and the attacker knew the victim.I don't think the OP is going to have to worry about getting raped in their living room, but needs to keep their doors locked, stay alert, and be smart as to which neighborhood they pick.
