I lived in Davie for a number of years. I was first attracted to it because it was slower-paced, and it seems like it had a diverse community from many cultures. Unfortunately, that nice diverse community is made up of college students who move after they graduate. There are a number of older people in Davie (perhaps younger ones, too) who are racist and have verbally expressed such views to me.
I'm white, but one of my black classmates had experienced discrimination while being served in a restaurant and by her daughter's elementary school teacher. Perhaps Davie has changed in the past several years, but I wouldn't want to raise my children there. ![]() Take care, Roseward |

It's been different since around 2000. Before that, it was kinda scary with a lot of what you said. There are still some remnants of Davie's "bad" redneck past in the smaller, trashier mobile home parks especially on the east side, but for the most part the "Good" ones stayed and the "bad" ones left. It's (racism) still there though, but still much better than most suburbs of a larger city in this regard. But, remnants remain.

Davie is uhhhhhhh different. I would say the whole "country feel" is limited to very small pockets. I used to drive down a road in Davie on my way to work and there would be a few people riding there horses which was cool to see but so out of place with the rest of the area. Dont be fooled though the prices for homes there are mega high just like everywhere else around here. Funny you mentioned the rebel flag because I did indeed see a guy driving a beat up pick up truck with the biggest rebel flag I have ever seen in my life, mounted on his truck. It was interesting to look at the faces of all the hispanics and blacks and even the non redneck whites who were just staring at it at the traffic light. Again very small pockets of country living in Davie, it usually ends when you leave your house and pull your car out of the driveway. All the "ranches" southwest ranches, longlake ranches etc etc are all fancy names for multi million dollar gated communites.

I'm as far from "redneck" as it gets, but I do too. I don't like racist rednecks, but I like rednecks.

Haha, you guys are probably thinking of "Florida crackers", if you lived with real rednecks in the mountains of North Carolina or wherever you'd hate them.

I was up in north Florida just a couple of months ago and twice was asked if I needed any help because I was obviously lost. I broke down in South Carolina once with my motor home and people could not have been nicer and they were all what would be classified as rednecks. I will take a redneck over a New York Greaser any time. Even when I was in the bar business i never got stiffed when loaning money to a good old boy and a few I swear would have killed someone for me if I wanted. For the old time south Florida crowd who remember, I used to hang around the old Crossroads bar near Davie in what was Hacienda Village back then. It was it's own township and the bar stayed open 24 hours and it was anything goes. The sheriff walked around like Matt Dillon with a cowboy hat and big pair six guns, I think his name was Red. They should make a movie about that town. One night the Crossroads burnt down and it was never rebuilt. The town was annexed I believe into Davie and that was the end of it. It was always rumored that the FBI had actually been behind the fire. It was frequented by all kinds including the Outlaw Motorcycle gang and I never had a problem. I was a straight up guy and they all knew it. Sunday morning it was the place to be gambling everywhere and you could buy almost anything out back from a stolen car to Italian shoes for $5.00 a pair. I guess as I think about it, South Florida has a bit of a colorful past. I will have to do some google searching for Hacienda Village and see what comes up. Interesting enough I managed to find this pretty fast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacienda_Village,_Florida I am not sure how Wikipedia works because some of it is not accurate but it gives you the flavor of the place. I know exactly what you mean! I don't consider myself "redneck" because I'm not like an extreme hillbilly (In an endearing way!!) But I do consider myself both country and southern and I love the whole southern culture! People come and try to say that it's all hype and that southern people are mean and two faced but it's not true!!
It's just that hollywood has degraded the south's image by A.) always portraying them as black haters (Which is not true) and B.) Making them look like Clumsy idiots who say stupid things like "Oh well, back on the farm, gramma's false teeth chattered" or just idiot stuff like that. Like in mainstream shows and movies, the ONLY person who has a southern accent is always like the stupid one who acts like they just discovered electricity for the first time... We're good people, we have have as much common sense as the next person, and sure small towners might be more trusting and street-foolish, but it's not like we ride around in covered wagons and we don't all live in trailers and are missing all but one tooth.... We are also not religious maniacs who handle snakes and try to call fire and brimstone from heaven to rain down on "Evil people" None of that is true, southern people are just down to earth and very nice...They're always willing to have a conversation with you even if you don't know them and they are always willing to help...Plus southern food is amazing! And so is country music! |
