News about the economy in the U.S. states that imports are down, gas prices are down because not as many cargo ships are burning up oil to bring imports to the U.S. so the demand for oil has lessened, driving down gas prices and the economy is showing improvement which are all good signs for Fort Lauderdale because Americans buying more products made in the U.S. creates work for the unemployed and brings about an increase in hours for those who were only getting part time hours as production of U.S. made goods increases the hours of manufacturing workers in the U.S. to meet the demand for those goods being purchased by U.S. consumers.
Since Fort Lauderdale has an economy based on tourists coming here to vacation, many who also buy real estate at prices that many residents of Fort Lauderdale can no longer afford due to a large number of companies paying exceedingly low wages in this area compared to the cost of living here, it's a good thing for Fort Lauderdale that more and more Americans are putting two and two together and realizing that buying American made goods puts money back into the hands of Americans and expands the economy instead of shrinking it as was the case during the most recent Recession that before and during saw a flood of imports coming into the U.S. that even consumers loyal to America were forced to purchase as American made goods disappeared from the majority of corporate run retail stores.
The increase in shipping foreign made goods to the U.S. drove up the price of gasoline as oil demand rose to fuel the cargo ships bringing those goods here, even though Americans were driving less and money flowed out of the U.S. economy to other countries where low wages prevented the workers there from coming to the U.S. to vacation in Fort Lauderdale and spend the money here that they got paid for making products sold in the U.S.
With the upswing in the economy due to Americans buying more American made goods, Fort Lauderdale should expect to see an upswing in it's economy because more Americans will now again have enough income to take vacations here as was not the case when Fort Lauderdale's economy was one of the first in the U.S. to go into Recession because of Fort Lauderdale's dependence on tourists from America to keep it's economy growing since no city officials in recent years have been successful in bringing U.S. manufacturing companies here, most likely because nothing has been done by Fort Lauderdale's elected city officials to halt the rising sea levels that will begin to cause salt water intrusion by 2050 into South Florida's main source of fresh water which is located under the Everglades and most manufacturing companies require a large source of fresh water nearby to economically manufacture many of their goods.
Although we have ports in this area, the majority of activity at those ports has to do with tourism since so little is manufactured in this area that large cargo ships are needed to transport those goods to other countries, many of which have very severe restrictions against foreign made goods being allowed to be imported into their countries such is the case with China, which restricts most of it's citizens from freely traveling to Fort Lauderdale and spending money here because the communist government the rules China doesn't want it's citizens buying foreign made goods from the U.S. and supporting a democratic form of government, which Fort Lauderdale has.
For that reason, although China has the largest population of any country on the planet, Fort Lauderdale will always be dependent upon American tourists to fuel our economy and if people in Fort Lauderdale want people from the rest of the U.S. to keep coming here on vacation and spending their money here, it would be a good thing if more people in Fort Lauderdale helped out their neighbors and the homeless here and stopped purchasing foreign made products and instead bought American made products as this practice sustains the economy in Fort Lauderdale when we put money into the hands of the people who are making what we buy when they come here on vacations and since more tourists coming to Fort Lauderdale creates job growth in the service industries that cater to the tourists in Fort Lauderdale when Americans in other parts of the U.S. are not losing their jobs or having their hours cut back because Americans, including those in Fort Lauderdale, are buying foreign made products, Fort Lauderdale would be able to have more economic growth than it does presently and provide jobs for the large numbers of homeless people living on our streets that's giving Fort Lauderdale bad press worldwide as city officials try to get rid of the problem instead of working to increase the availability of jobs in Fort Lauderdale.

The weak dollar is what fuels the Miami/ Fort Lauderdale area as Europeans, Latin Americans and Canadians get more bang for their buck along with the beautiful weather during winter months.

Default You're Wrong about Fort Lauderdale Tourists

The Latin Americans mostly go to Miami and that's mainly during our summer months, not our winter months, as the seasons are reversed there and they have winter in the southern regions of South America during our summers. Most of that tourism is based on shopping for goods that are either hard to find or expensive in Latin America and that's why Miami has so many shopping malls to cater to those customers.
Most of the Canadians that used to vacation in Fort Lauderdale go to Hollywood since the City of Fort Lauderdale hasn't done anything to preserve it's Mid Century Modern motels and hotels located on the isles Las Olas Boulevard like Palm Springs has done in California, creating a boom for their tourist industry as people travel to view and stay in renovated Mid Century Modern motels and hotels there. Many of the Mid Century Modern motels and hotels the Canadians used to stay in here have been torn down and replaced by boring looking townhouses built right up to edge of the canals on top of what used to be lawns, pools and sunning areas at the Mid Century Modern structures that were torn down to build those townhouses.
Many of the Latins you see in Fort Lauderdale have either moved here as their population is growing in Broward County, or they have traveled up from where they live in the Miami area to take advantage of the large number of discount stores, thrift stores and outlet malls located in this area.
The Europeans tend to go to South Beach much more than to Fort Lauderdale as many of the Europeans who come to South Florida come from urban areas of Europe where there are 24 hour mass transit systems even in cities there the size of Fort Lauderdale, where we don't have a 24 hour system so many Europeans don't even own or drive a car regularly and prefer to vacation where they can easily walk to things like they can in South Beach. I sell at an antiques and collectibles show from October thru May on Lincoln Road in South Beach and the majority of my customers are not Latins or Europeans but are instead Americans who have told me they vacation in South Beach because they don't want to spend the bulk of their vacation in a car driving from place to place and trying to find parking spaces and many of these Americans have told me they also own a condo in South Beach as a vacation home that they help pay for by having real estate companies rent out their condos to other vacationers, most from the U.S.
And the reason you don't see so many out of state license plates as you used to in Fort Lauderdale during tourist season is, although traffic has increased now due to out of state people coming in to vacation here, many Americans who have gotten wise about Florida not having a state income tax buy a second home here so they can register as Florida residents and they have a Florida driver's license and plates so they don't have to pay a state income tax on the profits they receive from their investment incomes like they have to in places like New York, Illinois, etc. where there are state income taxes placed on earnings from investments.
Fort Lauderdale was, is and always will be heavily dependent upon Americans coming here to spend money, which supports the local economy here, and that's why it's always a good idea to buy American made goods and put money in the hands of Americans who come here to spend their money instead of in the hands of foreign workers who, because of low pay or not being allowed by their governments to travel freely to the U.S., often can't come to Fort Lauderdale to spend the money they make producing products for American companies.
