I have been locating at some teaching positions in Broward County (Coral Springs and Coconut Creek) and at housing in Margate. Can anyone who lives there, has lived there, or has family/friedns there tell me what the culture is like. Is it a yuppy community or retirement community because if it is than the area is not for me. I would like a diverse community where one can have children and not feel out of place. Any info would be helpful.

You really need to read through all of the threads about life in South Florida. I am also from Ohio and I moved here 15 years ago. It was a very fun place to live as single, young person free of responsibility and the financial obligations associated with raising a family. I also taught for many years in the Broward County school system so I could really give good advice to you on what schools are to be avoided and salaries etc. Do you have children now? Are you single? Do you have teaching experience? What subject matter/grade level do you teach?
I would not want to move a family to South Florida. Most people (it seems) on this forum are looking to escape the chaos, high costs of living, threat of hurricanes and fast pace of life here. |

... is a city with mostly young people, great restaurants ,very good schools ( Florida level) and great schopping. It will take you about 25 minutes to the beach and about 30-45 min to downtown Fort Lauderdale.
Housing is very expensive quite classy and soffisticated ,traffic can be bad... If I didnt want to move becouse of the hot weather ...I would stay here..... It is a good location with lots to do.I just dont like Florida. |

I have lived in Broward for several years and it is a great place to live. You really can't go wrong with Coral Springs or Margate since they both are diverse and offer a wider variety of housing in all ranges. Please feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions.

Coral Springs sucks. I ALMOST bought a house in coral springs years ago and then found out that you cannot even have a wood privacy fence in most developments. The local gestapo actually showed up at a friend of mines house asking why there's a painting company van in the driveway and did he have a permit to get paint work done! ( During the day ) Who needs that kind of intrusion in life?
Look at West Boca if you are interested in 2,000++ square feet and a more pleasant surroundings. Palm Beach Cnty is so much nicer than Broward. |
