Do you all think that if South Florida, back in the Civil War days, had all of the [i]strong political liberalism and ethnic diversity it does now[i], with for example, Hispanics in Dade, northerners and Caribbean folks (including Jamaicans) in Pembroke Pines, Miramar, etc. we would have been Union or Confederate? Would we have ended up like West Virginia? Is it possible that we South Floridians would not be seen too kindly by government agents, both Union and Confederate? Please share your thoughts.

Also: Considering South Florida's unusual ethnic, "mini United Nations" mix, I'm pretty certain it would've already been hard to enforce both slavery and segregation laws. What would places like Pines and Hialeah and Miramar (but especially Hialeah) be like had they existed in their present forms in not only Civil War and Reconstruction times, but under the American British colonial system in general? How would the British and the Founding Fathers see Pembroke Pines, etc.? Share what you think with alternate history scenarios.

This is kind of a silly question and needs so many qualifiers as to render it absurd. Consider this:

During the Civil War, Key West was a relatively wealthy town. It had Union forces there and never sided with the confederacy. Fort Jefferson even held the supposed Lincoln assassin collaborator, Dr. Mudd.

If your Aunt had balls, would she be your uncle?

Who knows what would have happened during the Civil War if South Florida, with its population of 5.5 million, came up against the Confederacy with its free population of 5.5 million and 3.5 million slaves?

South FL isn't that liberal. So I would imagine they would join the confederacy. This isn't San Francisco where hippies are out marching in the streets protesting.
