Hi everyone,

We are moving to Florida and are looking for a safe, good, clean area to rent an apartment or townhouse - preferably close to the beach - south of Ft. Lauderdale. Work is in Miami but I'm thinking that we rather commute then to live down there? (We are 40s/50s with no kids.)

Also, I have read some of the threads and should I be worried moving to FL? (High crime, unsafe, unfriendly people, dirty, unpleasant, etc etc - the list goes on...) I'm thinking that is just negative people writing - or am I too positive/naive?

I want the truth(!) but we are moving so it's too late to turn back

Thank you for your time and help!

(Only serious answers please..)

South Florida is no different than any large metropolitan area. There are good areas and bad, as well as good people and bad. There are some beautiful areas - and some run down ones. A whole bunch of in-between.

Everything is going to depend on what your budget is, where exactly in Miami work is, and the type of area you want to live in.

It also depends on your definition of close to the beach. Most anywhere down here is within 30-40 minutes of the beach. Unless you really want to walk to the beach every day, you can get better value further west and just drive to the beach when the mood hits you.

Las Olas area 33301 and 17th street causeway area 33316 are close to the beach and decent areas but for the most part both can be expensive the closer to the beach you get. It would help if you tell us what you need and how much you are willing to spend but you can click on the links I have provided and hopefully you can find something in your price range and size desired. I put in 2/2 up to $2000 in my search and those are what I found for you.

Hi Gre8son, I've lived here my whole life and visited many places. I may be a bit biased, but it's a great place to live. I prefer Broward to Miami also. There aren't many areas where we ever feel unsafe and we like to venture around the area. We tend to be in a routine family/work etc but when you want to do something different it seems like there is always something to do.

A lot depends on your budget. Aventura is probably the safest, nicest area between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. There are many sketchy areas between those cities too. The beach areas are generally very nice and upscale, but expensive.

After tons of problems (I now have a new user name), I think I can't post because I'm copy and pasting from word... so, here goes typing it up again :-)

Due to some cookie problems, I can't log in under my other name and know once I log out from this one, I won't be able to log in again. Hence, Thank You so much for your private messages (which goes to my private e-mail) and for these postings.

I wanted to answer some questions and to also ask some further questions:

-our budget is up to $3000/month but I want a 2 bedroom apt for that.
-we will only have 1 car and since being close to a beach is our dream, what areas (that are green on the "crime-O-meter" would you recommend?
-I would like to walk, or take the bicycle, to the beach but if it's too far, it shouldn't take longer than 10-15 min with a bus (and preferably not through any bad areas..)

Q: my husband will work by the Wynwood area - it is too far to commute from Ft Lauderdale?
Q: I will be looking for a job (co-ordinator type roles), how big of a challenge is it to find a good job in this/these area/s?

Though I can't respond to any messages after I log out, please continue to send me messages and post on this forum.

Thanks again!

Have you considered the obvious? Live in Miami Beach or the Bay Harbor Islands? There are plenty of really nice places in your price range, and all the culture that Miami has to offer.

$3k is a relatively high budget for a condo or townhouse down here. For $3k, there is a TON of 2+ bedroom apartments in high rises right on the beach, with parking. And like Ann said, you could even consider Miami Beach or even North Miami Beach.
