I have a friend who is moving from upstate NY to Fort Lauderdale.
She is looking to spend about 1200 a month on a rental place.
Being a single woman, safety is her primary concern.
She has a car so wont need public transportation.
She would like to be close to shopping if possible.
What neighborhoods in and around Fort Lauderdale are best for her?

Note: Depending on how things work out, she may have a young daughter joining her.
At that point the schools may matter.
But that wont be for another year atleast.

Anywhere north of Sunrise Blvd and east of Federal Highway.

Can you be a little more specific when you say "Fort Lauderdale"? Are you referring to the city proper or the county? With a young daughter and shopping, she may prefer it out west where you have better schools and several massive shopping malls. Maybe west Pembroke Pines.

Well the daughter moving is atleast a year away, if at all.
She wants to be on the Fort Lauderdale area - not necessarily IN the city.
Will Pembroke Pines be affordable under 1200?
What about the east side like the other poster mentioned? Is that not so desirable?

How about Pompano beach area?

Only on the beach if you look in Pompano Beach. The rest is not too pretty.

Where will she be working?

A bad commute can diminish your quality of life.

We measure distances here in minutes not miles.

I am also new to the Fort Lauderdale area.. As far as your friend, for her first year I would recommend the Las Olas area, it seems to be the best area for newcomers due to the prime location in the heart of the city, access to restaurants/bars/nightlife/entertainment, and of course easy proximity to the beaches!

If her daughter moves down in the future she could also move out to the suburbs and by that point she will have a better feel for the area and what works best for her with a child..

Best of luck to her and her move!

She makes and sells jewelry - will need to travel around, but not the regular 9-5 commute.
So for the "commute", is it better to be east side?

Thanks MrKnight. Las Olas looks pricey to me - just my impression from visiting.

Again, Pembroke Pines. As far west as she can. It's plenty accessible to anything in South Florida. And if her daughter does come along, at any point, the schools are decent enough.
