Hi all and thanks in advance for any answers or suggestions. I've researched so much about this but thought it might be nice to hear some direct suggestions per my specifics.

Just found out I will be working in North Miami Beach and will be moving from Ohio. I am a female in my 20s and am looking for a safe neighborhood in Broward County. A place where I could walk to stores and such would be awesome if possible. I would love to be near the beach but I realize basically everywhere is "near the beach" with just a short drive. Also, it would be nice to be around at least some people of my own age, younger professionals. I like what I've heard about Ft. Lauderdale and Las Olas but am worried it will be a long commute. Definitely not looking to pay more than around $1500 for a one bedroom.

So, any other suggestions of towns or neighborhoods I could look into?

Thanks!

There are plenty of safe neighborhoods in Miami. If I were you I'd look at Aventura, Sunny Isles, Surfside. There are a lot of apartments and condos in your price range. You can walk around, but it is not like Las Olas. I know Las Olas is a 'scene' for the younger crowd, but I think it is overrated.

I lived in North Miami Beach and commuted to Ft. Lauderdale (Las Olas). It was a miserable commute. The traffic is awful, the drivers are aggressive and rude and the roads physically suck. It is a very stressful commute.

And actually, my commute was opposite the worst traffic, so you'd be going in the same direction as the heavier traffic. The heavier traffic goes south in the morning and north at night. In other words, you will spend half your week sitting in traffic. And I mean sitting, as in not moving.

Try living in North Miami Beach. If you think you can deal with the commute after you see how horrible the traffic is, move to Ft. Lauderdale--but FTL is really not that much 'safer' than Miami--it totally depends on the neighborhood and/or building. I would never do a commute like that again. Ever. It totally ruined my quality of life.

Not trying to bum you out, but it was really an awful experience. I thought I could deal with it, but it was much worse than I anticipated. Actually, I wasn't all that impressed with FTL. Not sure why you'd rather live there if your job is in Miami.

Fort Lauderdale will be a long commute. If you absolutely want to be in Broward, you can look at the Downtown Hollywood area. There is a decent number of younger people, decent nightlife, relatively walkable, a couple miles to the beach and closer to North Miami than Fort Lauderdale. You would have no problem finding something nice in your price range. Good luck!

I have to agree with the others. I lived in the area for over 20 years and traffic just got worse and worse. Better to look around Aventura or Miami Shores. An apartment in a high rise is going to be safer and better managed than one in a small building or townhouse style.

Hallandale would work, if you insist on living in Broward.

But as others mentioned, you should consider Aventura and Sunny Isles. Maybe throw Surfside and Bay Harbor into the mix too.

Just my two cents regarding Hollywood and Hallendale.

We looked at condo rentals in both areas. Hollywood has a kind of funky vibe, and it is definitely a younger demographic, but there are some seedy areas and honestly--it didn't feel all that safe in certain areas. The beach was really touristy with a lot of families on the weekend.

Both of us thought Hallandale was just plain boring and tends to have a lot more older people living there.

These are only my own impressions.

Well it's true there are some sketchy areas in Hollywood, and Hallandale does have older people, they're also the areas of southern Broward that have the most to do. Hollywood has the boardwalk and downtown, Hallandale has Gulfstream & Mardi Gras Casinos and they're the closest to NMB.

Honestly, I have to agree with pretty much everyone else in this thread and say you should just live either in NMB, Aventura, Sunny Isles or maybe Bay Harbor if you want something safe and close to your job with stuff to do. Within your budget you should have no issue finding a one bedroom in any of those areas.

Miami Shores is also a great option but there aren't a lot of apartments there, it's mostly single family homes and you won't find any for $1500.

Take it from me, I live in the NMB area and I commute to Hollywood everyday, this is the ideal commute. Going from North to South in the morning and then vice-versa in the afternoon sucks, you hit all the traffic both ways. It would make more sense to live in Brickell or Midtown and commute north to work.
