My friend is from Hollywood Florida but she's been moved away for last 14 years too Tennessee. She is now worried about the Hurricane Irma and has family that is homeless and trying to find them. Is there places for people to go for cover from Hurricane's?

Thanks

Yes, shelters will open a day or so before projected impact. Most won't take dogs or cats so if you have a pet check with the shelter first.

Yes. Let's do that. Let's leave a state where it's a strong possibility that the hurricane will completely engulf it. Then when you do decide to come back, you get to enjoy the horrific maze of non-flooded roads to make it back home.

Stay in a strong shelter (schools, convention centers, etc) and wait it out. Driving back to South Florida will be AWFUL.

She should try to get them to Tennessee with her, or at least out of state. Personally, I'm going to Atlanta. Shelter should be the last option.

There's a lot of people heading to Atlanta and hotels/motels along the way are filling up fast. Last year the Atlanta Speedway opened up for hurricane Mathew evacuees, so make sure you have supplies with you if you don't have a place to stay.

"and has family that is homeless... "

What part of "homeless" is giving you difficulty?

Having lived through Andrew, Wilma, Frances, and a few others in south Florida, trust me - the first two weeks AFTER the storm is generally the worst unless you are shell shocked during the storm. (I had one employee that was never the same after riding out the center of Andrew.) Staying away for those two weeks to allow power to get restored and supply routes re-established makes sense for anyone not needing to physically protect a house.
