Late last night I had a news channel on and the scrolling on the bottom said that Broward school board is now shuffling students in SW Broward.
Is this what I think it is? Are they moving kids around schools, even if they're not zoned for the school? I wonder if this will become an "all" Broward thing. They do this in Wake County (Raleigh area, NC), if this is what they're doing here. Moving the kids around to evenly populate the schools to help with over-crowding problems. But some people have moved to certain areas in Broward just because of the school zone...now they're going to move the kids around??? Last edited by AJ1972; 03-15-2008 at 08:27 PM.. |

It's not an "All" Broward thing, it's a Cypress Bay thing. The difference between Wake County, NC and here is that Wake County is actually growing and they are trying to plan for the growth, something Florida seems to have no concept of when it comes to schools. All of this reshuffling in SW Broward is because of 5500 student Cypress Bay High (largest in the country) and the opening of the new West Broward High School in west Pembroke Pines. Cypress Bay is ranked one of the top high schools in the state and does a lot considering their overcrowded conditions. Other surrounding schools like Cooper City High and Western High have empty seats, and although those two schools are some of the better rated schools in the state, they have aging facilities and they lack the "Cypress Bay" reputation and you had a lot of parents in those district using fake addresses to get their kids into the newer, more modern Cypress Bay.
On top of that, Everglades HS had it's own overcrowding issues and West Broward High is going to ease them. So no, it won't be an "all Broward" thing because generally most of the overcrowding and growth is in the SW portion of the county which is still gaining new families unlike NW or east Broward, albeit still at a slower pace. They are reboundering existing students into a new high school. Right now Cypress Bay (the school my home is boundered for) is just bursting at the seams. The 9th graders are attending an annex (really a trailer park) in Sunrise and have to take a bus to the main campus in Weston for certain classes and all afterschool activities. They are looking to close the 9th grade annex so that a much needed middle school can be built. The local middle schools (Tequesta Trace and Falcon Cove) are also bursting at the seams.
West Broward HS is a brand new school that will open next year to relieve overcrowding at Cypress Bay. The problem is that nobody wants to leave Cypress Bay. They all want someone else to leave. The solution that was proposed moves students south of Griffen Road to West Broward HS, some students in the NW corner of Weston to Western HS (a crappy school IMO) and keeps the rest of the students in Weston at Cypress. This is a very controversial plan and has lots of folks up in arms. It has pitted SW Ranches (south of Griffen) against Weston and is very divisive. It also leaves the main campus of Cypress Bay MORE overcrowded than it is currently because the 9th graders will be at the main campus (STUPID). It is not an "all Broward" event but it does highlight what morons run our school board. Look for a repeat of this process when the newest highschool (currently dubbed "MMM") opens in a few year. |
