Looking for some advice on moving my husband and I from Washington, DC to Fort Lauderdale in 2018. The only info I find on Google is thinly veiled advice from moving companies, which is useless advertising.

We are both at a point (45 & 55) where we want/need to start enjoying ourselves and we are both done with the "we will when the timing is right" attitude b/c the timing will NEVER be right in life. Fort Lauderdale has been a favorite of ours for the last 20 years and my husband is a Florida native...his father still lives in Orlando. I have savings (not including my retirement) of $300k to serve as our cushion until I find a job in my field of Mid-Level/Executive IT Management, so being unemployed for a bit isn't a fear. We are not looking to buy a home until we get acclimated and we're pretty much urban apartment dwellers anyway.

I know my request for advice is pretty broad, but anything Ft. Lauderdale natives can offer would be appreciated. This would be our first time leaping into the unknown (cuz I worry too darn much), but we know and feel that we need to do it now or we never will.

Thanks.

I think Fort Lauderdale is a fine choice. Enough city, not as hectic as Miami. Do you have kids? Pets? Some areas may be better suited than others if you have pets. Some areas are better than others for families with kids. Or vice versa, you may prefer to live in an area with not so many pets/kids What are your priorities?

No. Don’t ever relocate anywhere “on a whim” if at all possible.

All moves should be carefully curated and planned, not done on a whim.

I should have chosen a better title for my post. I would definitely plan this move out. I am detail orientated to a fault so I would have to know our housing and such is lined up...employment, not so much as I am also looking to take a short sabbatical.

No kids and just 2 mini dachshunds.

-don't want to be "downtown" but don't want to be in suburbia. so an area that straddles both like here in DC we live in Arlington (Rosslyn), VA. It's urban and a stones throw from downtown but not just pavement and sky rises.

-optional (for the few times a year we get on a health kick) walking to shopping, entertainment, etc

-straight shot 5 min drive to the beach

-centrally located to a major thoroughfare as I'll eventually need to commute

-higher concentration of blue state residents vs red state residents...progressive city or not, it's still Florida

We've thought about Wilton Manors, but I didn't want to be so cliche.

This is what Victoria Park or Coral Ridge areas of Fort Lauderdale look like. But they are pricey.

Also Poinsettia Heights is pretty nice.

My parents moved to Ft Lauderdale on a whim......

1975....2 kids, $3000 and a 2 year old Chevy Impala. Left the house up north for sale in the beginning of winter and moved to Florida with no jobs lined up. Both college grads, got jobs in banking. 1978 built a new 4 bedroom house in Ft Lauderdale and sold it 8 years later for double what they paid for it (without putting a nickel in it!).

This will limit your choices to living on the beachside. Traffic is quite thick to travel over the intercoastals.

Between the intercoastal and Federal Highway, you might be looking at 5-15 minutes depending on your bridge.

I just moved to the beach and it is quite a surprise with the drawbridges, going to work has become unpredictable time-wise.

I think around Las Olas would be perfect for you or Victoria Park and a few others. Early March we have the Humane Society dog walk and if you can come down, you can get a lot of input and have some fun. Also, I'm a Floridian and a Realtor. You have lot's of choices and reading between the lines, I know you are very detailed oriented. call me, Deborah Gibes 954-483-3439.
