Well south Florida, this is the beginning of whats going to be a tough road for you all. I lived in the Newtown area when Sandy Hook occurred. At first, I felt the way the OP does. Physically numb, sick to my stomach, distraught.. sometimes, I still can't believe it happened here.
The weeks on end of media, out of state residents, etc. The town became an attraction of sorts.
Then down the road, you'll deal with the conspiracy theorists who claim it never happened. They'll harass townspeople, law enforcement, local politicians, etc.. it won't get a lot of press but it will happen, and it will enrage you...
Then you'll form committees and attend meetings on what should be done with this school (or the wing this tragedy occurred in). Everyone will disagree and it'll be emotional. Then there will be the meetings on how to distribute donation money. Again everyone will disagree and again, it will be emotional. Then will come the cries to put a cop in this high school, and all the other schools will ask "what about us?" and again, disagreements arise. You'll get through it all and remember that in the end, everyone desires the same result: safety and security.
What you all need to do is just be kind. Get even more close knit than you were before. Talk to your neighbors. Buy that stranger's lunch or coffee who stopped in the drive thru behind you. Reach out to those you think need to talk even if you don't know them well. Being kind trumps EVERYTHING.
Five years after Sandy Hook, people are kind. There is a marked difference here. Yes, Connecticut has changed for the better. In general, society here is a lot more forgiving and a lot less judgmental. I guess it's a silver lining, if you will.. but it's a shame it had to come at the expense of children's lives..
And I'm really sorry that you're all now part of this "club" every area prays they'll never have to be part of.
Just take care of each other and you'll get through it.

We had "troubled" and bullied kids throughout my school years in the 1970's and 1980's.
I am sure there were troubled kids in all the decades before mine.
No one brought guns to school and murdered other children.
Something has changed - and NOT for the better, obviously.

He had a history of making threats, was expelled, but society didn't deem him dangerous enough to imprison him, or take away his access to weapons. And now 17 innocent people are dead, just because they went to school that day.
If he hadn't had access to firearms, this would not have happened. No matter what other measures are taken (and no other measures ARE being taken), nothing will stop this as long as people have access to firearms.
Do you think for a moment you can magically remove all guns from America? Some law abiding citizens might surrender them willingly. The rest not so much.
Armed thugs and criminals have a stunning advantage over an unarmed populace. Would we go house to house and take them by force from citizens?
That proposal is madness.
The root of this is lack of concern for an individual who by all accounts had exhibited anti-social behavior in the past. Nobody did anything about it. Kids interviewed at the scene said "yeah, I was not surprised he did that".
Was he bullied? Perhaps, lots of us have been bullied and even as adults we suffer them. We don't go on shooting rampages either.
I have questions about the young man obtaining the firearms. Just exactly how did he get them?

Totally agree. Something has changed. I grew up in pretty rough circumstances. Never saw anything like this ever. There were guns around. I think we had more respect for the law and other people years ago. Today its me, me, me, me, me, not you, me, me, me........

When a drunk driver kills someone with their vehicle, do we blame the vehicle or the booze he was drinking, no, we put the blame where it belongs, on the driver, it is no different with guns, the gun itself does no one any harm, it is the person who uses it for the wrong reasons that sadly causes the harm.
My heart goes out to the families and may those killed rest in peace and those injured get well soon.

A culture rotted by Hollywood, where brutal violence is considered entertainment, serial marriage and shacking up is celebrated, and traditional values are mocked. This was starting when we were kids back in the '70s and '80s but it has increased exponentially, largely due to the internet and things getting more violent and more deviant with each passing year.
I remember Mike Huckabee making a comment on TV after the Newtown shooting where he said that when he was a teenager back in Arkansas or wherever, the boys would all have a gun rack with a rifle in it in the back window of their pickup trucks that they drove to school to use for squirrel hunting after school, so basically a bunch of boys were taking loaded weapons to school. The difference between then and today? As Mr. Huckabee stated, "None of us would have even remotely considered that you would use a gun to hurt a human being." They probably had parents who cared and taught them right from wrong. A lot of that is gone too, replaced with kids living with Mom and her latest shack up boyfriend or Grandma because Mom is too strung out on drugs to raise them and Dad is long gone.
The question is, how do you "unrot" an entire culture, especially when so many in the upcoming generation who will be tomorrow's adults don't know any different?

Yeah, 17 kids dead. Sounds just great to me!!!
When choosing a school, always ask a variety of students, not just parents or adults. They will give you an idea of the level of support and whether or not the community brushes aside certain concerns. I think it's telling that one of the top schools in Broward deals with discipline like other schools, in a way that would further isolate the student. The shooter was banned from bringing a backpack as part of his discipline? Everyone knew he would be next?
The kid clearly needed more help, but, yet actions taken only pushed him out. It seems his parents kept sending him to school knowing he was a problem so no real support from home.
When I think of a good school, I consider the options available to the school on dealing with problem students, not just the options available for the affluent or academically inclined. Parents choose these schools for a variety of reasons. Those asking for recommendations on Facebook often request special needs support a must from their next school. Parkland is usually recommended. I just think this is a mistake because you are only receiving input from parents, who may or may not take their children's concerns seriously.
Raising a family in Parkland is still, in my book, preferable to other Browsed communities. Those families will come together with a level of support I wouldn't see in mine.
It sounds like this top rated school was limited on their options and either many didn't know or were in denial. Those are the things I listen for when talking to students.

The speed of information exchange has changed. The delivery of information exchange has changed. Who we exchange information with has changed.
People deep in their community and people in the margins now have access to a wider community. The marginal people, I am guessing, did not have this access decades ago.
