Our problems are NOTHING compared to Mexico. Three words- state oil company. However, despite their reputation, Mexican culture as a whole is nowhere near as violent as US culture. All we hear about are the border towns and Mexico City. Pretty much the rest of the country is as safe or safer as the US, but I'm sure you already know that. From a tourists point of view, I would rather walk around all day with a 100 dollar bill taped to my rear end in Cancun than pump gas for a few minutes in Orlando at night.
That gang related crime is also LONG gone. That was back when it was a regular managed apartment complex. Now to move into that particular complex is like entering the CIA. I looked into it. Now worrying about gang crime in a neighborhood like that is more of a Palm Beach County thing.

The dollar still goes a long way in Mexico, and it's possible to live quite an upper class lifestyle - maid, driver, cook, gardener, etc. for the same costs we struggle to get by on here, although not quite as good as it was pre-Nafta. I've been visiting SMA since I was a young girl (I had an uncle who retired there) and feel quite safe and at home here. Part of my desire to relocate is purely my own sense of home, and as conditions deteriorate here, I guess it's natural to want to return to where I was happy as a child.
And, I'm glad to hear gangs aren't really an issue!!

I don't know though...like I said, the oil company is at the brink of disaster...but you should always follow your heart! If we want to continue this let's do it in the chat thread instead of in this one.

Good to know - I'll look into that before any major real estate purchase - thank you!

compelled, I am referring to the early 2000s till recent. The only 'real' gang problems I have seen have all been east Sunrise, east of University, near 60th Avenue.
When I was growing up in FL, we had big gang problems. Lots of graffiti, etc. Alot of gang task force, etc. There were alot of gangs but times have changed alot.

I appreciate all the input! I'm getting into contact with my employer to see what's included in my relocation package and then going to talk to a realtor, with those specific areas in mind and maybe head down this weekend or next. Thanks so much! I will report back lol

All right, I went down there last weekend and had absolutely no luck with a Realtor. I've resigned myself to an apartment complex at this point. Weston just doesn't have the bang for your buck that I'm looking for in an apartment complex. I've called around Plantation/Sunrise/Davie looking for apartment complexes, and I have couple that I'm going to go check out on Thursday. Does anyone have any specific suggestions as far as good ones to check out? It's much more difficult doing this with no idea of the area than I thought it'd be, so I'm just glad I've stumbled upon to this board, you guys are excellent.

Sunrise, Plantation, Davie apartments
I have lived and worked in Sunrise for a long time. My best adice is to live off of 595 perhaps off of University Drive. I do not know if you are considering Grad school or not but Nova SE and FAU have classes at the BCC Main campus which is very close to 595 and University. South on University from 595 will get you to some reasonably priced apartments and if you have to go to the airport everyday, then you need to be near 595. If you are working near IKEA you will go against the flow during the rucsh hours. Even more importantly, you can walk or ride a bike to most of your personal errands right in that general area (groceries, walmart and the Broward Mall is about 2 miles away). Lastly, the area I am speaking of is patrolled by Davie PD, they are very good and do a very good job protecting the campus area as that is high profile and bad press goes a long way there. Good luck

I just moved here and looked just north of sunrise/your new location in zip 33321. It's called Tamarac and would be a 20 or so minute commute. People laugh about Tamarac because of alot of retirees but its safe and reasonable. Not ugly either at least where I was looking.
I just looked at realtor.com and your Sunrise zip code only has two complexes for rent and not cheap. You can do better in Tamarac but it's a commute. My son is 28 and just moved out of Tamarac because he was bored there but he's been living in so Fl since college. You can get a short lease and take your time. Realtor.com has condos in Tamarac for $850 2br 2bath. You have to watch though frequently are 55+.
Try going on realtor.com and call some of the agents listed, yes it's a big PITA and sometimes they are apathetic because of the market but just get a big list for your next trip. You can find something decent in your range especially if you're willing to commute 20 minutes or so. I had to fly back and forth several times ...it's tricky.
I think Tamarac has apartment complexes too but I never really looked much.
do the mapquest on 33321 to 33325 and you can see the area and commute. Then when you come back down here you can do the drive and see.
Stay west of University if you go up to Tamarac.except just east ON University and the intersecting streets in the various mainlands communities, some are not age restricted and houses for under 1200. My son had a rental house there and enjoyed it and so did I. You get a house near shopping with community pools (sometimes two pools) that arent crowded or mobbed with kids.

I ended up with a 1/1 at Welleby Lake Club for like 985/mo
I only post to let you know how it resolved itself, and if anyone has any experience with the place. I'm not looking for horror stories as apartmentratings.com can supply plenty of those..
Thanks everyone for your input!
