I've been doing alot of research about relocating to So Fl and I have come to the conclusion that if you are in the healthcare field, you are in great shape job-wise down there. I'm just curious, are there any other industries that have a big presence there? I am from NY and finance and real estate (not just brokerage, more management) are big industries here.
What does everyone do in FL? |

Other than healthcare, here are some other major fields where you can actually make money...
A. Selling something to someone else (or also small business ownership). B. Anything marine is big, involving anything from boats to biology. C. There is a fairly decent and even growing IT market, but pay is not favorable compared to the more serious IT cities (Austin, San Jose, Raleigh etc). Citrix Systems is talking about leaving because they apparently can't find talent. D. Committing burglary. Real estate used to be big, but it's suffering. However, our real estate market is by and far the worst in the state (probably the whole country), but the economy here is generally holding steady compared to other parts of the state. Aside from the RE problems, there aren't many visible signs of a staggering economy here, although 5 years ago the area was in hyperdrive. Now it's stagnant. A lot of people here also commute to Dade County which is still holding very steady, even growing economically. Banking and finance, especially for Latin America is big down there. Strong arm robbery a growing industry in Miramar in particular, although it's fastest growing in Palm Beach County. I heard the Broward Burglar Bureau doubled it's membership however.

That sounds more like Tampa
. South FL drifts more towards armed robbery although the drug smuggling was correct.Last edited by compelled to reply; 05-27-2008 at 12:01 PM.. Reason: spelling |

When the economy gets bad, crime goes up - everywhere. 7 random shootings in harlem last night, subways are littered by robberies (one guy used the tracks to escape), armed robberies in bodegas and delis. It's just bad everywhere.

this is true. I am from Brooklyn originally. I was there a week ago. The difference for people in S. Florida is, they are not used to that level of crime (this is suburbia). So its a bit strenuous right now for people down here. |

I figured that. I was in FL last August and I turned on the news one night - I thought it was pretty funny how the linger on a couple of "crime" happenings and half of the news time on the weather. Big difference.
Where in Brooklyn? Did you notice the changes in some places in Brooklyn? Crazy how expensive! |
